    OS Giken Differential in Viper

Gen IV diff is ViscoLok: very different from this. BTW, I fried mine after 15,000 miles of mostly highway driving...max 4 hours of track time at 80-90% of car's capability, no 1/4 mile runs, no street racing. If it happens again, I'll go with this Giken unit.

Clunking from the rear when going over bumps?

Replaced driveshaft, no help. Tightened every conceivable nut and bolt, no help. Replaced the diff; problem solved. Weren't permitted to break down the old unit's clutch pak but oil had visible particulate throughout like clutch plate surface material. Half-shaft setup with 560 lb.ft. of torque...

Viper to be canceled and new Viper to come in 2012

Hey, man! 1BADGTS has been valet-parking cars at drag strips for decades. That's where his extensive knowledge comes from.

Are gen 3/4 engines as bullet proof as gen 1/2?

Gen IV added 90 HP over the Gen III and adopted the bigger bore pistons and rods from 6.1 litre HEMI V8 for added strength. Slightly bigger displacement was a bonus, not the objective. Not interchangeable with previous generations. Heads, block, crank also new.

Clunking from the rear when going over bumps?

I'll be looking at ball joints again but am curious if you've had any occasion to replace one of the new diffs and, if so, why?

Clunking from the rear when going over bumps?

I read you. If this was just another high performance 'groan' I'd live with it. I, like most Viper owners I suspect, experience audible torque-related feedback from various areas of the car most of the time, and the much-reported intermittent power steering noise (sounds like that's what you...

Clunking from the rear when going over bumps?

Nope; sounds like u-joint/ring gear play: it's heavy and metallic.

Clunking from the rear when going over bumps?

To clarify: the noise in mine is not associated with going over bumps. The sound appears as I accelerate from a dead stop, slowly, in first. Most recently (following driveshaft replacement) it showed up after shifting into second, as well.

Clunking from the rear when going over bumps?

Appreciate the input and will pass on to my Viper technician - many thanks. How would you explain the spring-loading sound that accompanies the clunk? I first thought it might be a badly seated coil spring, or even the (tranny) clutch itself but all is well there. Is it a coincidence that the...

Clunking from the rear when going over bumps?

Update: Tightened every nut and bolt under the car: one was finger tight (center bolt on transmission mount to frame). Shift smoothness improved, obviously, but noise still there. Shocks, swaybar, control arms all good. Viper techie suggested invisible hairline cracks (metal fatigue) in hollow...

Strange Starting Problem after a track day...... Mark J, please read! :D

Back in the day (1/4 mile) we struggled with vapor lock every summer. Once the problem was diagnosed, "cool cans" were installed between the fuel pump and carbs to cool down the gas (usually attached to inside fenderwell near the rad). We used coffee cans. The reconfigured fuel line came...

    Car and Driver sucks.

I acknowledge that you've probably participated in the mindless destruction of more cars, including Vipers, than I ever will. As I inferred, when it comes to showing a car who's boss, you're the man!

    Car and Driver sucks.

Hey! Never doubt the word of 1BADGTS: he knows a guy who knew a guy who had a friend who knows a guy that was there when the guy delivered the rag to the store and was asked why there wasn't a VIPER involved in the test. If that's not enough, he either personally arranged for every VIPER road...

Clunking from the rear when going over bumps?

My '08 Coupe (15,000 miles) is in the "clunk" rather than "knock" category; reminiscent of 60's MOPAR ring gear when engaged with an auto at stall speed. It started about a month ago and is only evident at low RPM, in first gear from a dead stop and can be intermittent. It's often accompanied by...

    Battery tender help

In addition to full tank of gas, 45 lbs in tires and mats under each wheel, on my '08 last winter I used the "battery save" feature but also started the car once weekly; brought it to operating temp; rowed the gears; back and forthed the car a couple of feet in the garage to keep the ring gear...

Just picked up my first Viper!

Love the '66 Belvedere! I ran a 4-speed '67 GTX with a serious HEMI (12.5:1, etc. Spun it off a 600 HP dyno at the machine shop with 1,000 RPM to spare); low-to-mid 11 second car, restricted by terrible street rubber choices at the time. Stepping into that second 4-barrel at ~4,000 RPM was a...

Black smoke out of the exhaust?

If black under acceleration, worst case scenario is ring damage...if black when letting of, worst case scenario is valve stem seals.

Vipers at the Biltmore! August 22-23! More info!

I ran over a dead deer in PA last year in my '08 Coupe doing about 75, dead of night (coming from the Biltmore, coincidentally). $32 to replace a sacrifice strip under the front nose and an hour to clean up, including removal of a rib cage caught up in the diff. Otherwise uneventful: loud...

    Gen IV cam specs

You've probably seen these "published" (lift only) specs, from the internal SRT team presentation, but I offer them here in the event you haven't. I have the same question you do: why no cam specs? I understand the secrecy in a factory race team context but any competitor can reverse engineer...
