J-Rho autocrosses an SRT-10 in SCCA SS class

Hi George, Parts are on their way from Woodhouse, should have them in by early next week. Yep, this could be a real deal for someone. They still have to get themselves out there and pay for their hotel and stuff, but $800 to run a Viper that has a very good chance of winning the championship...

J-Rho autocrosses an SRT-10 in SCCA SS class

I'm looking for a codriver for the 2010 Solo National Championships, held the first week of September in Lincoln, Nebraska. Codriver should get a couple test-n-tune runs in the days before the big event, the 3 runs each day in the big event. The car is super fast, super fun, and extremely...

    Run Flat Alignment Specs Steet/track

There's nothing so different about a run-flat that would lead to a radically different approach to aligning the car. I'd suggest, Front: Camber: -2.0 (which is about max you can get at stock ride height) Caster: max you can get at that camber, probably ~5 degrees Toe: 0 Rear: Camber: -1.5...

    Half shaft removal?

Are we talking about the halfshafts (the U-jointed shafts running from the diff to the rear hubs), or the stub axles (the short splined axles that stick out of the rear end) ? When you say "seized in the stock rear end", makes me think of the stub axles. Can't imagine they're having trouble...

    Moton Spring Rates for AutoX

You should be looking more at the ratio between the spring rates instead of the absolute rate difference. 600/900, the rears are 50% stiffer than the front. 750/1000, the rears are 33% stiffer. Besides making the car stiffer overall, it would also shift the balance towards understeer. If the...

News bulletin releif for Gen3 autocrossers!

This is fantastic news! My sincerest thanks goes out to the folks at SRT, and everyone else who helped make this happen. This is the sort of support that keeps people coming back to Dodge/Chrysler products. Mark, you have PM. :drive:

ACR Ring record, how do they measure downforce

The way to measure downforce with suspension transducers is to drive the vehicle at a constant speed (or multiple set speeds) and measure the suspension deflection with the aero components. The surface needs to be flat and smooth though, with no accelerations occuring, so you can get a good...

ACR Ring record, how do they measure downforce

If their speed channel was based off rear wheel speed and not GPS, it would bounce a bit with wheelspin. I'll have to check out the video again, haven't seen it in a while...

ACR Ring record, how do they measure downforce

That might work in testing on a perfectly straight and smooth road Mark, but would not work in a dynamic situation like the 'Ring. If they know it makes 1000lbs @ 150, then it makes 250 @75. A simple formula like (speed^2)/22.5 as a math channel off the speed data in the data acq. would give...

ACR Ring record, how do they measure downforce

Likely just a calculated value using speed as an input. Downforce = u * speed^2 where u is a factor based on wing size and coefficient of lift, the latter not necessarily the same at all speeds

Dunlop Star spec Z1 as front Tire high speed "autocross" ?

Wouldn't recommend mixed tires F/R, the balance of the car will be inconsistent as the tires move through their grip vs. temperature curves. Not to mention the differences in feel and response, etc. Shaving a new street tire can actually decrease the probability of it chunking, due to...

What keeps wheels down in hard turns?

Tires work best when supported by proper width wheels, and 315 Hoosiers prefer something 11-12" wide. But even when limited to 10", the 315 will provide more grip than the 275 or 295, something like (275 on 10") < (315 on 10") < (315 on 12") Believe it or not, I actually found front grip...

J-Rho autocrosses an SRT-10 in SCCA SS class

Ended up third place in the El Toro Pro Solo. Just didn't drive as well as I needed to, the car was working really well. SS is one tough class!

accurate weights on Gen III, Gen IV and coupe vs roadster

My car weighed 3327 last weekend, with lightweight wheels/tires and about 1/4 tank, otherwise stock. When I had a straight-pipe cat-back exhaust, the car measured 3308 with a similar fuel level. Not all scales are calibrated properly though. Oh, it's a 2004.

J-Rho autocrosses an SRT-10 in SCCA SS class

First event of 2010 SCCA season, the San Diego National Tour, was this past weekend. I thought I'd be clever and run the "SSM" class. This is a class for highly modified cars, but I saw in the entry list there weren't any top-flight efforts signed up, so I switched at the last minute. At...

What keeps wheels down in hard turns?

Saturation of available weight transfer on the axle is what generally causes wheel lift when not talking about curbs/jumps. Lowering the CG height is the only good way to reduce overall weight transfer, and keep more weight on the inside tire. I run my 2004 on stock springs and ride height...

    315-30 X18 on the front?

Yup, have fit 315s and 335s up front on 18x10" rim w/no problems at stock ride height.

SRT Engineering Chat HERE on March 3rd!

Would like to again see if it is possible to have the 2008+ Viper LSD issued as a part supercedence for the 2003-2006 LSD via a TSB. The 2003-2006 LSD is a poor piece, if the newer 2008+ part were listed as a factory authorized replacement for the old unit, racers bound to stock pieces like...

Too much body roll on track

Stiffer shocks won't change how much the car rolls, only how fast it rolls. Improving your alignment should increase the available grip, which will increase the amount of body roll. The only ways to decrease body roll: Increase roll stiffness via stiffer springs and/or swaybars Drive...

Item recovered from Diff drain ???

They do "key" the hydraulic component of the diff to the main case. You can see the screw hole at roughly 12 o-clock in the pic is on the opposite side of the ring gear hole vs. the other three, so the pump part can only go on in one orientation to the main case. I suppose those screws also...

Item recovered from Diff drain ???

Proshop, the stock Gen 3 diffs are woefully inadequate for hard racing-type use in the Viper. They were originally designed by Dana as highly streetable but still off-road-worthy diffs for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Between personal experience and in reading the experiences of those here, I have...

Item recovered from Diff drain ???

Screws go into the back side of that piece in the above photo, below is the same piece flipped over. Notice that the head of the ring gear bolts really ought to trap the little allen bolts well enough, that they shouldn't be able to escape. Good luck with the repairs.

Item recovered from Diff drain ???

That's weird. Looks like that is one of the 4 small screws that holds the cap of the diff to the main cast part. What makes it weird, is I believe the bolts holding the ring gear and everything together, "captures" those screws, leaving them no way to back out. Could be a ring gear bolt has...

How do you keep the rear end at the rear?

Claude, if you're going straight the diff isn't doing anything unless you're getting wheelspin. The diff can't "lock one side or another", it locks both wheels together, or not, depending on what's going on. I see you have a Gen 4 but if you're interested I did a good write-up of workings the...

How do you keep the rear end at the rear?

The Gen III OE diff is a piece of crap for sure but I don't think it's as bad as everyone says. It can even work ok when driving hard with the right fluid in it. The Gen 2 (and Gen 1 I'm guessing) diff is a basic clutch type which is perfectly fine. Anybody pushing their car hard enough on...
