1996 GTS High Idle (2500-3500) at high altitude (8000-9000 ft)

Dan, You said something that I found quite troubling: This issue is very common on head and cam change cars when the tuning is not precise. There is an area in the Map where the computer does not understand the relation between MAP and TPS, the high idle is mostly timing advance, not IAC...

1996 GTS High Idle (2500-3500) at high altitude (8000-9000 ft)

Just had a theory on what could be happening taking into consideration the P0175 rich bank code. It actually goes back to the dyno curve on nitrous. This car had 123 bottles through the 150 shot system. The fuel system was left stock and fuel to the nitrous nozzles was taken from the injector...

    1996 GTS Oil Pan Upgrade

So is the dipstick level mark the same for both pans? I got the oil changed and it took 9 quarts AND the OE dipstick was manually scribed lower than the stock FULL mark. One other related question: Is there a larger oil filter that can be used?

1996 GTS High Idle (2500-3500) at high altitude (8000-9000 ft)

Thanks Dan! So it you start the engine at 5000' and then drive to 9000' , the ECU think BARO is still at 5000? I seem to recall when it did this 10k miles ago, I tried shutting engine off and then starting. This last episode I didn't try that. __________________________ The idle being timing...

    P0175 only & MAP=6 in-Hg @ Idle w/heads, cam, headers 511 rwhp: Vacuum Leak?

Trying to get a specific answer to "Does it sound like a Vacuum Leak?" This is part of a much larger problem for which I have a thread "...High Idle... High Altitude..." Specifically listing codes in title may attract more Wizards I'm hoping.

1996 GTS High Idle (2500-3500) at high altitude (8000-9000 ft)

MORE INFO: Turns out it is going on at 4500 altitude - never really noticed it because at this altitude, the idle sometimes hangs around 1500-1700. The VEC1 LOW can act as an idle speed control - but its not that simple. At this altitude, adjusting LOW to MAX or MIN causes it to drop to idle...

Touring About: Finding last minute <$50 lodging: Thoughts?

Rough itinerary is back roads to I-70 in Colorado. That's the only Interstate I specifically want to drive on - they say its spectacular. There isn't much I'm aware of trying to see in the Mid-West so probably Interstates there too. However state highways are probably straight and fast too...

Touring About: Finding last minute <$50 lodging: Thoughts?

I plan to drive cross country Carson City, NV to Pittsburgh, PA with no definite itinerary. I may do it in 4 days or 10 days depending on my mood. But I do confess neither GPS nor Internet maps are capable of planning an interesting tour. The roads of interest "go away" when you zoom out so...

    1996 GTS Oil Pan Upgrade

Finally pics: Turns out my memory of the pan was completely wrong. No rectangular iso grid (maybe I confused trans or rear???) But fortunately I save face because mine has 3 ribs and not the 2 of the pan I said I didn't have (!)

    1996 GTS Oil Pan Upgrade

I don't know what's up with my ID. I can post, but I can't click on links - it says I don't have permission. Can't click any of the How To Do It links either. Can click on Search links though. Any ideas?

1996 GTS High Idle (2500-3500) at high altitude (8000-9000 ft)

Don't know. It had California Official Upgrades done to it - there are official tags in the engine compartment. My guess is no. TNT Motorsports did the heads and cam and then a 150 shot nitrous system was added - I would have to guess that someone local in SoCal did that. NOTE: The nitrous...

    1996 GTS Oil Pan Upgrade

There are 2 reasons for a deeper pan: more oil and less windage (keeping oil lower and away from crank.) I wish I had read these posts earlier - I just had the car on a rack for oil change. I got a good look at the pan. It is "square iso-grid" finned aluminum with a sump that is NOT the...

    1996 GTS Oil Pan Upgrade

I'm trying to figure out what pan Wayne Skiles put on "Bad Viper." He told me when I bought it that he did something and had to scribe a new, lower fill mark on the dip stick. But I've forgotten. Could it be that newer Gen II's had deeper pans? I know when I put the 9-ish (don't remember...

1996 GTS High Idle (2500-3500) at high altitude (8000-9000 ft)

I've had this happen twice. At high altitude in the Sierra Mountains in NV/CA, engine idle will increase to 2500 (and as high as 3500) in a few seconds. Dwell there for 5 to 20 seconds and then "burp" or "fart" down to proper idle. At normal altitude of 4000-5000 when I would back off going...

Sun Visors: Upgrade from 96 GTS vinyl to later cloth? Do they work better?

Yeah, they suck - and that's why I need the driver's side - I removed it when I had to wear a helmet. However, I'm going to put about 3000 miles driving cross country and when your into the sun with a sand blasted windshied... well, that completely sucks. Maybe someone should design visors...

Sun Visors: Upgrade from 96 GTS vinyl to later cloth? Do they work better?

I have vinyl OE in my 96 GTS and mistplaced my driver's side visor. I cam either find a used vinyl one OR upgrade both to the later model cloth ones. I have heard the cloth ones are wider (hang down lower when in down position) BUT I'd like to know if they can fold forward (from down...

    General's Highway Rte 198 in SoCal -v- Deal's Gap (The Dragon) TN/SC

I drove The Dragon when I was at VOI7 Nashville. I stopped at The Tail of the Dragon and asked if any Vipers have been through. They said no. I was crushed. Anyhow, I have to drive Bad Viper from Carson City NV to PA and while surveying maps found General's Highway north of LA. I've...

What is the best Shifter for Gen II Vipers?

A very biased reply from a notorious street racer from the 70's: A short throw shifter is cool looking but unless you are very strong, don't expect to powershift the single cone T56. In reality, you pretty much need a crowbar to get the big load on the synchros for a fast shift - if you are a...

GTS rear glass lifetime warranty lift supports: Sachs, StongArm, ???

Getting a Taste of the Rockys: Pikes Peak? Speeding Tickets?

Thanks all for the specific routes to try. I've worn out all the roads around Carson City, NV and just love those windy hairpins going up the mountain. Usually when you're out of town, you don't see traffic cops. I guess the altitude (loss of HP) and shortness of straights eliminates 99% of...

Getting a Taste of the Rockys: Pikes Peak? Speeding Tickets?

In NV, the best mountain roads (Virginia City Hill Climb, Rose Mountain, and Kingsbury Grade) usually do not have speed traps. I have driven them over the past 14 years and while not a resident, I have never seen a speed trap. So you can have brief periods of intense fun on those roads. In...

Solo Cross Country Trip in Viper Contingency Plans

Wow, Billet P/S bracket and pulley? I was not aware of that one. What do they do? crack? does the pump "fall off" the engine? is the OE bracket steel or alum? Come to think of it, I don't have the frame recall welding done either.

Solo Cross Country Trip in Viper Contingency Plans

Oh, and just to use up some more room, I have a spare 335 I'm taking back with me! I think internet access is the most important. I had a friend have a wheel fly off his Blazer about 1 hour from home here. He got a ride back home, but it took us about 4 hours on the internet/phone lining up a...

Solo Cross Country Trip in Viper Contingency Plans

Condums? HaHaHaaaa! (how true) Have to tell this story: I'm driving my new 2000 GTS to the dealership and I pull into this gas station to get some pop and this faded silver Honda pulls up behind me. This 11 out of 10 stunning twenty something, must have been a stripper, girl gets out (yes...

Solo Cross Country Trip in Viper Contingency Plans

Thanks Steve! You sound like a Great Guy - hope I don't see you(haha) At least not under those circumstances. When I bot my new 2000 GTS, the first new car I ever bot and the most I had ever spent previous only a car was $7k - I drove it to FL from PA with 90 miles on it, in January. I had...
