Hey everyone-just a quick question. Is there any reason to NOT get my SRT 10's oil changed at the dealership? Have any of you gone elsewhere to get yours done? Any suggestions or advice?

Thanks!

I've paid for 1 oil change out of convenience during an alignment. I'm doing my own oil changes. I don't own an 08. It's just like changing oil in any other car. Some people feel better having the service record. I don't want to hand my keys over to some kid in charge of the oil bay at the dealership.

I use Grease Monkey here in Colorado. I have to back it in to avoid hitting the guides they have on the front of the pit though. I also bring my own SRT filter. Never an issue.

Depends on the dealership, some are "viper friendly" and others have never seen the car before. You need to contact your local viper club or area and see where they are going for service.

See my post: http://forums.viperclub.org/threads/655017-209-Full-Service-Oil-Change-at-the-Dealer.

In addition at the same dealer a teenage lot girl jumped into my '05 SRT 10 Ram to move it when my back was turned while I was talking to the same service manager. I heard a loud screech with lots of engine noise and yelling and turned to see my truck going sideways in the service area as she lost control. She had been told by the service manager to move it for the oil change. We had a serious talk among the 3 service managers, the store manager and myself with that incident!

What he said. My two local dealers both have Viper techs and do alot of work on them.

It's an oil change. Easy do it yourself job, but if you want to take it somewhere take it to the dealer. Why not? This is as basic as it gets, drain the oil change the filter, add new oil. There are irresponsible employees everywhere.

Ditto for me. Changing the oil in this car is no different than any other car. The only thing you'll need is a low profile jack and a jack stand. Just make sure that the old filter gasket has been removed before installing the new filter. I always wipe and clean the filter surface by habit so I've never had that issue.

For those of us who owned Gen I's, remember the PITA that was because the filter was mounted horizontally and you had to "wiggle" it out to clear the frame......

One of the reasons I prefer Grease Monkey or Jiffy Lube is that they let me pull the car into the bay. They never drive it unlike the dealers who always have someone pull it into the bay, maybe its the Viper Tech and maybe its not. Who knows unless you watch the car the whole time.

Save the money and do it yourself. In addition to just changing the oil, I also take a sample each time and send it to Blackstone Labs for analysis. For about $25 you get a full report back in a few days. With the report, you might catch an oncoming problem before it happens. A good example would be a spun bearing. If you catch it as it's wearing, you can drop the pan replace the bearings without too much expense. If you don't, you might end up having to pull the crankshaft out to either replace it or have it machined smooth again.
If you want the records for resale, I know as a buyer I would rather have a full report from each oil change instead of a reciept saything that one was done.

check for the right oil filter---they tend to put the wrong one on.

My Viper tech is THE only one who touches my Viper inc oil and filter changes especially under warranty. Why take the time and disposal mess of changing your own oil when a proper Viper tech (not a lube joint) will do it and document it for very little labor cost considering the price you paid for the car. I just drive there and wait an hour and its done with appointment, plus there may be other maintenance items he can attack at the same time while on the lift. If you do not have a good Viper tech nearby that might be a different story.

Agree but the issue is the "Viper Tax" being placed on oil changes at some dealerships. Taking the car to the dealership and letting the Viper tech perform the oil change is the best way. However, there's no way I'm going to spend $150 for 11 quarts of 0W-40 and a Viper filter whereas they actually cost around $75 total retail. I have changed my own oil in the past but now I simply purchase the oil and filter myself and pay $20 for the labor at the dealership.

+1. Thats EXACTLY what I do after each oil change. Blackstone Labs provides a valuable service and they maintain your history online as well.
