Hello all! New poster/user to this board. First of all, I would like to thank all you for the valuable insight and information found here. I have NEVER found a better source of knowledge for the Vipers! I hope to soon upload a picture of me in my GTS!

one question, what is the point of the 1-4 skipshift? I read about the process of disabling it, but I am wondering why DC put it in at all?

Thanks for all the help!

Welcome aboard Cbroker!

To the best of my knowledge a few "high performance" cars are equipped with this feature. It is used to assist the manufacturer in achieving certain MPG requirements relating to the gas guzzler "laws". Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Some of us don't mind it and others find it to be irritating as heck, hence the skipshift eliminator.

For having to pay a $3000 gas guzzler tax I feel I have the right and duty to guzzle as much gas as I can. The skip shift eliminator was at the top of my list of mods to be completed before I pick up my GTS.

Isn't gas already taxed??? So by guzzling more gas we are paying more taxes. Or in other words, we are additionally taxed for paying more taxes

. Will someone please explain the logic in this.

Dont bother disabling it. Usually only a bother to rookie owners, or during break in. Can be bothersome IF you have to drive in heavy, bumper-bumper traffic. Once you are comfortable with the car, youll only hit it in a blue moon

Having the Skip Shift allows Dodge to hold the gas Guzzler tax to ONLY $3000 on our behalf. Supposedly, Only VIPER has a Gas-Guzzle penalty of all USA-built cars in 2002

If I wanted to NOT be able to be in the gear I wanted to when I wanted, I would have bought a Viper with an Automatic.
(hint- they are very, very rare.)

I think there actually was one production Viper with an Automatic Transmission AND a 360 V8! Dodge pulled the engine and transmission out of a 1996 GTS and swapped it into a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup that was painted Viper blue with white strips to match the GTS. Dodge never built more versions of a Viper powered Ram because it wouldn't pass crash tests (using the truck V10 in the 1500 series Ram for the tests). The forthcoming Ram SRT-10 does pass crash tests and will have the SRT-10 Viper engine in it and probably the Viper transmission, too.

I know JonB knows just about everything about Vipers because he's a virtual Viper Parts Rack.

The point I'm trying to make is I want to be in any gear at my choosing any time I want to. I have a Dodge Ram pick up that only comes with an Automatic and I only have limited control over what gear I'm allowed to be in. I've never owned a manual transmission vehicle and I want to be in complete control of whatever gear I want to be in because that's the fun of driving a manual transmission - hence the skip shift eliminator.
It's an inexpensive mod. Not like the $3000 gas guzzler tax on a car that is rare as a Viper.

Skip-shift is a non-issue if:

You get used to revving it up just a little bit in first, past the point at which skip-shift is active. Admittedly, this is not hard. But sometimes I am thinking about other things, and when it caught me off guard, it was extremely annoying.

OR-

You don't have to drive in slow, heavy stop-and-go traffic, like we do in LA.

Even though I drive in LA, heavy stop+go, I was able to learn how to avoid it without too much trouble. But the very few times it caught me off guard pizzed me off just enough to dis-able it. I want complete control over when I shift, and to what gear I shift to. And I don't want to drive with the constant knowledge that when I least expect it, that damm thing is gonna get in my way.

Having a manual transmission that tells me what gear to be in is like having an electric shaver that tells me how to trim my mustache. I just don't need the input, thank you.

I get way too excited over this topic. Think I'll go for a walk.
