Back in Feb, I was having a problem with my belt slipping. My power steering went out and I started to overheat. I took it to Ted May and he said my crank pulley bold was loose, so he tightened it. About 3 miles later the same thing happened. Ted told me to take it to Dodge because I have a 0 deductible warranty that runs out in 07. I took it to Capital Dodge (5 star and Viper dealer). After having it for over a week, and after re taping the crank bolt hole, they returned the car to me. I got it home and let it sit outside for a few min before I found a HUGE oil leak under the car..... SOOOOooooooo I had to return the car back to Dodge. It turns out they forgot to put a seal back.... well all went well till yesterday when I’m driving downtown on a nice sunny day. I’m just driving along listening to some music, minding my own business when I hear a big CLUNK/BANG/GRIND. I pulled into a parking lot and looked under to hood to find out that the crank pulley just fell off..... full on came off. I don't know if the bolt broke or came out. I have the car back at Dodge now. Dodge said they will fix the car and that’s good. But how do I stop this from happening again? Can I make them replace the engine? What leverage do I have? Thanks

You've made several attempts to repair the existing components however, you may want to finalize the outcome by following through with a different repair strategy. I would surmise if you have any "substantial" damage to the snout of the crankshaft the engine should be removed and sent to Arrow for a complete rebuild/crank replacement.

Good Luck!

same thing happened to me today on my 94rt/10. What cost is involved and what is involved in the repair...is it a do it yourself? I have a show in 2 weeks and would like to have it ready, but of course don't want to rush things.
Thanks!!

I thought Hartzheim Dodge was the preferred Viper dealer in the South Bay? Can you comment on the recommendation? Did Ted recommend Catitol directly?

I have heard of this problem on several cars, or course, keying the crank is a solution, but not sure if DC will do that...

I am sure others on the board have had this problem, look forward to their comments.

Look under General Viper discussion and the thread-- Dodge rep for poor repair service--. Its a mirror of your problem. Never use a dealership to touch your viper.Myself and many others I know have had terrible experiences like yours at dealerships. Most of their techs are usually not that experienced, just like useing a dealership for paint work. Never. The good ones move up to specialty tech or paint shops and are paid better too. I hope you get it worked out and that you have someone else you can take it to. We are fortunate in this area to have TNT, RSI, etc.

Roe Racing has a fix for this problem. It is a drill and tap set up that bolts the pulley on from the side. Check with Sean, it ended my problem.

I was luckier. I ran 4000 miles without the bolt ...
There should be a call back on this issue ...

Ya, someone mentioned the crank pin set...interested to how that worked for others...pleas share.

As well, I bought the new pully today...and it doesn't slid on (phew). So that's nice, but I want to take all precautions that it doesn't happen again. So I have the Pin Kit, rekeying the krank and what else???
Thanks guys...nothing like being without the baby.

I hate to say it but if your crank pulley spun(more than once and even then), most likly you are in need of a crank as i have fought with this on mine with the roe supercharger before the pin kit was released and pinned it only to snap the pins. If it is under warranty make them remove the engine and send it to arrow otherwise it will just be borrowed time. My .02. Jerry

AB, yes, the crank pin kit from Sean. Mine spun off, we spent a good deal of time filing the nicks out of the crank to put the new one back on. Larry Macedo then pined the crank when he did my engine rebuild.. That was 5000 miles ago with no more problems.

Well...I talked to a couple of folks and the new pully won't slide back on...so we are taking that as a good sign. Once we have the new pully on we are locktighting everything and then putting on the pin kit. The krank wasn't damanged much...I only drive a mile or 3/4 of a mile on it at 40mph or slower...coasting the last bit. So we are going to try this and see how it does...I remain hopeful but am prepared for the worst. I will work on it next week and let you guys now how it does. AS well I plan to put some kind of securty pin on there as well just in case it desides to get loose again.
