Straight from Tremec-(TTC) themselves. Someone in the aftermarket would be foolish not to duplicaze these differences for sale if Dodge wont sell them to us!

<font color="red">You are correct; one of the changes made was that the countershaft is now
one piece for this model versus two piece on all others. The other change is
ratio. At this time, parts for the TUET1806 VGX viper transmission will only
be available through Chrysler dealerships. I do not see these parts being
available to our distributors for at least two years.

Interested Subject: Technical Question
Details: Hello,

I was wondering if perhaps you would be able to tell me what specific
changes occured to the Tremec T-56 Transmission for the 2003 Model year as
opposed to the 2002 Model year? Specifically, for the Dodge Viper. I have
heard rumors of a one-peice countershaft, though no one is able to confirm
or deny this fact. Also, would these changed components be available for
purchse through you?

Thank you for you time.

Thanks Daniel.

What would be even more interesting is the reason why they changed it. Certainly for increased torque capacity, but specifically from what to what?

It is my understanding that the new one peice countershaft eliminates the durability issue in VERY high HP cars in 5/6/R, as the splines that connect the 1/2/3/4 shaft to the 5/6/R shaft sheer off durring High Loads for Extended perieds of time. What I dont understand... is why didnt some machinist with half a brain ever sit down in front of his Lathe and say "HMM... we could take care of dat d'ere problem by making our own shaft, a one peice..."

Sorry that I can't remember the article, but one of the SRT-10 write-ups quoted a Dodge engineer who said that the GENI/II tranny setup worked against itself and would bind under heavy loads causing failures, and that the new design used in the SRT-10 eliminated this problem.

We saw several T-56 failures in Germany...most of the time the connection (splines) between the two shafts was broken. This MUST be the reason for making the shaft one piece now.

Money drives most of those decisions. The Viper market is too small for one-off pieces, that are only needed when one fails, which is a relatively small number. It may be ALL high HP cars that fail, but overall, its still a small amount of demand that may not make it worth the input of time and development.

OK, thats my go-with-the-flow apologetics.

Here's what I really feel-

The Tremec T-56 is a piece of Mexican uhm, tranny. My first one quit returning to neutral after 16,000 easy miles. If you pulled the stalk to the left, its suppossed to spring back to the center, but mine just stayed there. So I got it replaced under warranty. The brand new one returns to center just fine, but has a new "feature". When stopped at a light, and if I'm in nuetral, I can't put it into first gear. I push the stalk forward, but it just won't go into gear. Not all the time, but quite frequently. I have to let out the clutch in nuetral, and d*ck around with it a bit, then it goes into gear. I'm gonna have to take it back AGAIN!

What the h*ll kind of ****** is this tranny made of? Borg and Warner are turning over in their graves.

ps. You are to be commended for your efforts in contacting Tremec, I applaud your initiative.

If Tremac went to identical solid shafts on all 2003 T-56's, perhaps a parts distrib. would sell them if they were "for" a Mustang?

The person that mentioned the mustang may be on the right track. One of my co-irkers is heavily into the mules and evidently the latest and greatest mod for them is the 6 speed tranny upgrade with the t-56, although I serious doubt
that many mustangs will make anywhere near the power that the viper is capable.
