What material are the original rivets made of that hold the insulation in a 95 side sill? Aluminum or steel?
Not that I'm doubting the Wizard but I have a major decision to make and I have to be 100% certain of the answer and I've heard more than one answer many times.
I just bought a 95 with 2K miles. It has no corrosion problems, no paint bubbling, etc. It's never been washed. I took the sills off to replace the exhaust. They look new inside and out and the rivets look perfect.
If they are aluminum I won't remove them. I'll glue a ThermoTec heat barrier over the entire inside of the sill on top of the insulation. This will cover the ends of the rivets closest to the exhaust. This along with the new "no cats" exhaust should stop them from heating up faster than the sill and cracking the paint. I don't know how much I believe the bi-metal story. I wish I had one to send to a metal expert.
