Would a 97gts have manifolds or headers like the mopar part number 5007019 and if it does have manifolds by changing to the "newer" production headers would I actually increase the horsepower as compared to a production car like a "1999" with tube headers?

The 97 headers are not the same as the factory 99. That I know for sure but I'm not sure about the specifics.

As before, 97 has cast manifolds.

A 1999 has fewer HP than a 1997 due to a Cam / PCM Change.

If you added the tube-style headers (used-$250 or so) to a 97 you would lose 25 ugly pounds of forward weight, and gain MAYBE 5-7 HP on a '97. Direct fit.

Would also fit GEN ONE with minor grinding on header.

Unless something has changed the 98+ tube header is not a direct fit (ie:no cutting/welding) unless you also buy 98+ cats to go with them.........

The 96 & 97 GTS had the same cast exhaust manifolds. The 98 and on have tube "short" header manifolds that are 23 pounds lighter and flow a bit better. (They are the same as those “street headers” in the Mopar Performance Catalog at http://www.mopar.com/m_perf_parts_product_part.jsp?categoryID=10026&itemID=760 ) But take note of that “Welding Required” Comment........................................

The flange of the cats is different between 96/97 GTS and 98 and on so you cannot use the 98+ style tube header on the 96-97 cat without fabrication. If you get the 98+ header AND 98+ cat it should all bolt together. The 98+ is a better way to go, (except there have posts about them melting the P/S line--per some posts by Dan Cragin)

SO.....If you buy a 98 take off header set or the Mopar “Street Header” for your 96 or 97 be prepared to cut and weld the flange to fit your exhaust OR if you don't like that, be sure to buy the front end of the exhaust (the cats) of the 98+ along with the header in which case you will not have to cut & weld.
