I have a RT/10 97 with 34K miles on it, but I would really rather have a GTS I think.

Since there were only 117 97 RT's made I have not found any others for sale to compare pricing.

Do you think asking $47K is reasonable? I would grade the car an in "very good" condition.

Mileage is a bit high. E-mail me. I have a few questions and am actively looking. I just sold my 00 GTS for 57k and am looking for an RT.

A 97 RT just went up for sale on autotrader this morning for $30K, I tried calling the dealership and emailing but haven't been successful. If anyone gets through please let me know.

Just took a look, it looks like a GenI so can't be a 97.

Worth a call, but if it sounds too good to be true....

So what are the signs of a Gen I from this picture? I thought I could tell off-hand but somehow I totally missed this one. (not that I have the money yet)

yeah, its a first gen.. but still, 30k isnt bad for a viper.. especially if your wife keeps bugging you for one..

Well I'd like to trade if possible to help kill sales tax. Has anybody ever heard of trading?

I am going to contact a couple of dealers and see what kind of trade in I can get. I know you can do better selling it yourself but maybe the sales tax difference will even out.

I know the 97 RT is a pretty rare Viper, would that bring any kind of a preimum? I just wanted a GenII when I bought it, did not really care about how rare it was.

What do you guys think?

State of Ohio - Sales tax laws changed two years ago. Tax is always paid on the car you are purchasing. I'm trading in a Gen I on a Gen II. I'm, paying the total tax on the new car, not the differential. Perhaps your state is diff.

If you're going to purchase a GTS from a dealer, definitely sell your RT yourself. Most dealers will do what they call an "in-and-out" trade on the vehicle you sold. In others words, you will supply the information on your RT to the dealer from which you're purchasing the GTS. He shows it as a trade in on the purchase order, thus saving a good bit on taxes. All of this is done strictly on paper, the RT nor the purchaser needs to be present. Best of all it's perfectly legit. I have done this on 3 of my last 4 vehicles, most recently on my '99 Viper GTS. The documentation fees charged by the dealer to do this will be anywhere from $25 to $500.

Do yourself a favor and call Bill Pemberton at Woodhouse first (800-889-1893). I think that they have done trades sight unseen - they ship you the GTS and pick up the RT/10 when it is delivered. Might be a good starting point. Good luck!

OK, I think I have finally figured out what I am going to do. I have a friend who want to buy my RT. Should know by tomorrow afternoon if he is going to buy it or not.

IF NOT, then I am going to advertise it for $44,999.99 and take $43,500.00 for it (I have to get $435K for it to be able to sell it) It ought to move pretty quick at that price.

I am going to advertise on our boards classified (viperclub.org) and the autotrader. Any other good places anybody can recommend?

Thanks for all the input guys! I am excited about possibly getting a GTS!

At $36K I'd buy it in a heartbeat.....of course you'd have to wait until summer to actually get that money.

monnieh,
Do you have any pics of your car that you can email/post? I am looking for a red 1998 RT/10, but may be interested in your 1997. Also, does it have any factory warranty remaining/extended warranty?
