2000 GTS UK member has been suffering a few cold start-up idle problems. Plugs good and few obvious checks OK etc. So connected it up to Roes EASE software to look / read for any trouble codes. Instant concern, with ignition left in "on" position, fuel pump is not de-energizing, it's 'firing' away, was worried it would burn itself out. Pulling the ASD relay stopped that problem which ign "on". But, clicking and clacking noises under hood, IAM was clicking, pulled the wiring to it and it shut up, but below fuse box and possibly starter solenoid was clacking also...yikes it has gremlins! I was expecting the IAM to be the point of cold start issue (very clean, not gummed up with oil puke though). But, wonder if it's not the IAM itself but the sensor input, as other ign "on" inputs are wierd? I have to admit I've not had any experience with 2000 snakes but logic tells me that the above is not normal! The PCM OBD output is also not registering as "on" with the EASE kit until engine is started and running, like wise if you try to trigger trouble codes normally set by disabling sensors with ign "on" the codes are not being set until motor is running. Could someone please confirm this is not supposed to happen on 2000 snakes, (I know it does not on earlier ones).

The Viper has an aftermarket alarm / tracking system fitted... which I suspect as being the source of problems and possibly engerizing or shorting out other systems in the ign "on" phase. I took a quick peek to see it is wired to ing supply, and they usually always wire to fuel pump also. Unfortunatly ran out of time to investigate further. Can swap my IAM to confirm if there's problem with IAM or not. Any tips / experiences comments most welcome before I get the chance to look at this Viper again?

Hmm, this is what I CAN tell you:

-Fuel Pump should only remain energized for about 3-5 second after key is moved to on. It should not re-energize until PCM recieves pulse signals from the Crank AND Cam sensors. I wouldnt worry about it burning out, as it has a fuel pressure regulator on the back end, and will just circulate fuel and keep itself cool.

-I am assuming by IAM, you mean the IAC? Idle Air Controller? The IAC will click a couple times as soon as you put the key in, but if you LEAVE the key on the "ON" position, it will cycle every ?30? seconds or so, after about 30 seconds of a non-start situation. (I cant remember for sure, but I believe this is only if you CRANK the engine, and it doesnt start- then it will cycle. otherwise, all is quiet.)

-I cant think of anything UNDER the fuse box that could click...? are you sure thats where its coming from, or is it actually in the box?

PS- is there ANY modifications to the wiring harness? was anything on it connected, repaired, replaced, moved... etc?

Thanks Daniel, most helpful info.

Yeah, IAM (Idle Air Motor) meant IAC (we speak different in the UK!!)!

Yep, car has security device wired into the loom, to ignition, and most probably fuel pump...I think this is most certainly the cause of the problem.

When the fuse box seemed to be clicking, if you laid a finger on the top of the relays you could feel the click / vibration; could not isolate it to one relay though. (And ran out of time to investigate further at the time).
