On stock air filters, whats with the big "sponge" in the front!?

I took my air boxes off to inspect the filter, fount 30K worth dirt/bugs/OIL (???!!?) and all sorts of other Sh*t in there! Still has stock mopar filters. The paper element looks good, but the "sponge" material is black, greasy and sticky/nasty. Uggg.. definetly time for tubes and filters!

Man is this **** dirty... but, the other side of the air box is clean as a wistle, so I guess the filters did their job

James, if you are considering installing K&Ns, brace yourself for a cuss session!! They won't fit, and the air box clips also won't stay on...You will have to do the air box mod with a dremel tool, or try the S&B filters...

Just wanted to warn you. When I did my K&Ns and Smoooooooooth tubes I was all geared up for a technically very simple job, a 30-45 minute job then the reward of a completed job...With some cleaning of the plastic/rubber under the hood (some #40 Meguires) and a little detailing, should be a great hour spent...Another great Viper Experience.

WRONG....Those K&Ns are crap from a fit up prospective!

Be ware!

Hey Guys,
I put mine in with no cutting. I guess I just got lucky or the BFH I used had more power than I thought.

Put K&N's in just last night, no problem at all...fit perfect...put them in the rear portion of the airbox, then slip it back together, no problems at all...

James,
I picked up the S&B filters and smooth tubes from Sean Roe along with his 5 piece radiator hose kit. The S&B's fit in your air box PERFECTLY and they come with the same guarentee as K&N. I've used K&N for years in my cars and motorcycles but after seeing the difference between the two I'll never buy K&N in the future.

Ordered my mopar wires (JonB) and a set of smooth tubes/filters (Roe) a few minutes ago.

What type of plugs should I run?

I am TRULY PUZZLED...

I just called 1 "tuner" who claims to have installed 'over 200 sets' of K + Ns. I have installed probably 20+ sets. I called our VCA Viper tech, who has done a bunch.

NO ONE HAS EVER HAD A K+N PROBLEM !

K+Ns have a MoPar part # and fit tight and perfectly. Warranty-friendly to warranteed motors (not that a big deal would occur.)
Multi-million $$ product liability, and a Viper part #.

We 3 suspect operator error, but do NOT want to offend.

OLDER BOXES can 'sag' in the middle, but just pull em a bit and the K+Ns fit right in. Tight is good. Maybe add a bit of oil on the rubber gasket and it will slip right in, IF its too tight.

The last time I checked S+B, there was NO part or filter specified for Viper.....None. No fitment, no liability. **** IN A FILTER element under heavy accel, or have a stone flo-thru, and K+N pays. The S+B fit is coincidental for Viper. Is it rated for V-10? No data from S+B. It's cheaper why??

So, I say you are probably (?) OK with other filters, but I suggest only K+N or MoPar. Good enuf for Oreca and Team Viper and Mopar.

And the ACR came out in 99. Perhaps the fit in the airbox was corrected by then? Or maybe all of us don't know how to install air filters.

While not a major problem, it is a well known issue.

NO WAY JOSE! The K&Ns do NOT fit Gen I's...Maybe some folks get lucky, but look at why there is a mod listed on this site. They just don't fit, period...End of report...I fought with mine, for quite some time...Just look at the particulars...When the air box is closed and latched the stock filter gaskets compress...The stock filter gaskets are very soft compared to the K&Ns. Make an estimate if how much they need to compress...Now try to compress the K&Ns that much...AIN'T gonna happen...

They ****. Technically the engine does, but you know what I mean!

JonB is absolutely correct on the K&N fitment...the K&N's go right in no problem...I think the controversy is that people are trying to install them in the front portion of the air box, because when you pull the stock filters out, they do (or mine did) come out of the front portion of the box, whereas if you simply SET them in the rear portion of the box, every thing goes in perfect, and is about a five minute job...no sprung clips or "dremeling on the air box"...

I did what you described re putting the filters into the rear most 1/2 of the airbox. In fact, I took the entire assembly out of the car, and wrestlted with it on my work table...

Its like trying to put 10lbs of *&$% into a 5lb bag...The strain on the air box clips was well beyond what they can handle.

Snake Bitten, no problem! I wonder if the Gen II air box will fit the Gen I...? But that I guess gets back to the original point. One should not have to swap an air box to get a simple air filter upgrade to fit...

Can you tell that I was hop'in mad when I tried to install my air filters?..Your experience is what is supposed to happen!

Look in the illustrated how to do section on the board and you will find directions for installing K&N's in a 94 RT. I did have to use a dremal tool since my airbox clips keep poping off!! No problems with my 97 GTS!!

Vetper bliss...
I put K&N's on last week on my 95 gen 1. The fit was PERFECT. They fit nice and snug so I know there is no leaking.. I originally wanted the S&B's but after reading that they weren't really for a viper, they just happen to fit, I wanted K&N's. And with precision having a $100 'tubes'n'filter' special, it was an easy choice..
