Deadman;

I enjoyed your flywheel comments. I too have really considered this flywheel mod. Your comments on the parking lot "bucking" made alot of sense considering that the throttle response should be more instantaneous. It must respond to the slightest touch at those low rpm's.

Was there really no appreciable "seat of the pants" difference in aggressive acceleration? An example like getting on the freeway and getting on the gas up the first three gears? I was hoping it would be more noticeable.

keep posting as you get more hours of driving in. I would enjoy hearing if you start to notice any more differences.

Thanks,

jim

My engine is in the rebuild process with Arrow, and now would be a great time to change the flywheel over to a high performance aluminum one. Just got a few questions for those of you that have made the switch over to an aluminum flywheel on your Viper now.
1) Does it really make a big difference in how fast it spools up?
2) What kind of improvement can I expect in 1/4 mile times with this upgrade?
3) Did you have to adjust your driving style much when you went from the stock cast iron one over to the aluminum one, for street driving, or was the transition minimal?
4) Any downsides to the aluminum flywheel that you have noticed?
Will get the kevlar clutch anyway, but just want to know how the aluminum flywheel affected the performance of your car

I had one put on my Viper by Dan Cragin at the Viper Shop.I liked the way it slowed down the best, it felt much smoother.It takes a little while to get use to but its a good thing.The starting and stopping was greatly improved.I dont have any numbers,its a good modification to do if you have the Viper apart already .My Viper was jumping out of 3rd gear ,had the trans replaced and did the Flywheel at the same time.Im just a weekend driver sorry thats all I know.

Hey Roland!

Like those above, I don't have any 1/4 mile times to show. But I had an Archer Racing aluminum flywheel and heavy-duty clutch installed in August. The car definitely spools faster and seems to break the tires loose a little easier than stock. Rev matching can be a little tougher. However, if you get the revs wrong it isn't as much of a shock to the driveline. Also, down-shifting while coming to a stop is easier on the driveline as well (the car doesn't "buck and clunk"). That combined with the new clutch and clutch hydraulics makes the car very easy to drive, even for Heather!

I think I'm the one who first posted about "bucking" in slow traffic or in the parking lot. I did NOT say that it was smoother. It is definitely more herky-jerky.

I ran a PCA event at an old bomber base down near Brownsville last weekend. (You want to hear about a Viper-friendly course?

) Anyway, after not being on track since Viper Days at TWS last November (2000), I never missed a downshift. I couldn't make a good SOTP evaluation because it's been so long since I drove on track and it was a new course to me. Anyway, I was barely edged out for TTOD by a Formula Continental.
