How loud would my car be if I just took the muffler off and left it that way. Would I lose performance? Is it a big ticket?

I had an old RX-7 a long while ago, and the muffler kept unbolting itself. It was so loud it gave me a headache. I used to get really mad at the noise it created. I would get so mad, I would punch the dashboard. It smelled really bad too (maybe I just had a bad smelling car). One time I went to pick up this chick whose parents were rich, and I parked halfway down the street because I knew all this white smoke crap would be bellowing from the engine, and then when she came to the car, it was still doing it AND I had to pushstart it down the hill. I don't think I impressed her too much then... but F her now... I would show her a thing or two now! Anyway... would it be too loud? Would I get angry and punch the dashboard again?

Thanks,
Mike

And since there is nothing in your profile concerning what year.......

Assuming GEN II....Removing the reasr muffler will have NO effect on smell, it will NOT be too loud, and is one of the most cost effective mods you can make. :) My GTS has nothing but pipe from the cats back and is loud....but not TOO loud.

Oh, it is a 2002 GTS. I will change my profile later. I am going to look underneath my car right now and see what I have to do. I just want to see what it sounds like.

Man, I just banged the back of my head on the concrete trying to lay under there and get a feel for it. Plus, I just ruined my shirt that I really like, and I have a black stain on my nose. My wife is going to be mad about the shirt.

lol, this guy is a joke .. hahahah.. only a poser like ViperMad would respond.

Well me 2 of course, but thats only to make fun of ViperMad.

PS. I think punching the dash is a great idea.. except use your head instead.. it will make the exhaust barely noticeable over the ringing in your head..

You do prove a point about how ANYONE can buy a viper.. if you truly do own one.

Yeah I really own a Viper. Vipermad has been nice in responding. I like to add a sense of humor/stupidity with my posts. I haven't punched the Viper, and I tend not to punch anything at all anymore. I get hurt easier now than I used to.

You must be one of those really serious Viper owners right? You place your entire existance on your car and what others think of your car? Is that correct? When you drive, do you wear sunglasses so you can see who is looking at you without them knowing that they are looking at you? LOL.

Mike,

Love your posts.

I see 2 problems with modding your exhaust.

First, while you can make a Viper louder and possibly crisper, you can't make it sound better. I realize this is highly subjective, but it will never sound as sweet as a V8. Oddly enough, an unmuffled early Viper sounds a lot like a Rotary. I'm a Rotary fan, but no one ever said they sound good.

Second, and by far the single most important reason to never ever even consider monkeying with the exhaust; Laguna Seca. Laguna has Draconian sound regulations (rumored to be more strict than DOT). A bone stock Viper barely passes. So, if you want to run Laguna (you do), you want to leave the exhaust alone.

I think you'll find that while you can't make your Viper sound like a good old V8, that doesn't mean that you can't make it sound like one MEAN SOB, especially when you are at WOT. Personally, I like the fact that they don't sound like every mustang and camaro I see on the street.
