Hey gang,

My gas cap has the clearcoat lifting in a few spots that no one would notice other than myself every time I put gas in the car. That said, noticing the pitting 5-8 times per week is bothering me!haha.....

I have a contact in the motorcycle business that polishes up parts to high polish sheen (using Jewelers Rouge on a buffing wheel?). He states it will appear like chrome after he is done. Of course the clearcoat would be gone, therefore a touch of "autosol" a few times a season is all that is needed to keep it looking 100% I am told.

Anyone have any info to share on that? Worse case if it becomes a botched piece I could go with an assembly from MGW is my theory!

Thanks for any insight....

The problem is the latch area, due to the wear and the removal of the clearcote the corrosion will continue to be a problem. The trick is not the buffing/polishing, the trick is to keep the problem from happening again. MGW does it right, there is no wear area on the latch and everything is tiple plated chrome.

I stripped the clearcoat off mine. Polished it to the look I wanted, grabbed a spraycan with clearcoat and applied it!
Just a couple of hours work and it looks perfect!

The early cars did indeed have the corrosion mentioned above. Never cars have a plastic "roller" thingie instead of the metal one. If you are concerned about originality, a new one will be slightly different. Also, you may try your dealer and your warranty. If memory serves me, the cap is covered under the 7 year corrosion warranty.

Since I went for the MGW gas cap I have a brand new stock gas cap available (warranty replacement/never used). Anybody interested - send a private e-mail, please.
