Sorry,
But I have to vent.

It is a gorgeous day in San Diego, sunny and 80. I took the viper to work and went to a late lunch at a local fast food place near work. Parking lot is nearly empty. I park where I can see the car. Go inside and order, and sit waiting for the food. An older gentleman in a medium blue BMW convertible with the top down tries to park right next to my car, doesn't cut his steering enough and hits the rear fender and drivers door. I am up out of my seat and out the door and he takes off. I think I have his plate (California 5BAH47). The damage is not really that bad. I took clay to the paint scrapes and they are nearly all off. There is one chip of paint about the size of a quarter on the lip of the inner fender and the door cleaned up ok too. But what an ass. I couldn't even eat my lunch and just threw it in the trash. Is the any way for a civilian to trace a plate? There is not enough damage to report it.

Sorry for taking up bandwidth, I'm just pissed!!

Yup, turn it in. The police will give you a report with their address after they finish their investigation, even during.

Gawd Kurt...that *****!

You're missing a number on plate. Should be 3 numbers on the end.

Let me see if I can figure out what it might be.

Man that *****. If you got most of the numbers, on his plate. I think the police will have a good chance in catching him. Im glad that the damages on your viper were light. It could of been alot worse. Anyhow Hope that guy gets punished.. Good luck, keep us posted....

Don't repair it yourself. Or at least wait until it is sorted out with the old timer. You're tampering with "evidence" now--the police might not pursue it because he can say the damage was obviously "old". I'd still pursue it though, when the cops arrive he might just spill everything (his guilt, his ***** from his crappy prostate, and his bottle of ******).

YUP! turn it in. i had a hit a run several years ago in my mustang. got the plate and noticed the car in the neighborhood. the guy lived 3 blocks from me and he denied he hit my car. went into his garage and got measurements with pics with his damaged and then mine. all the marks matched and took him to court since insurance didnt want to pay cause there were no witnesses. somehow insurance got involved and eneded up paying me and and extra $1000 for the delay and hassle.

I actaully learned about hit and run the hard way. I was rear ended in stop and go traffic on the freeway, at the time I was driving a Ford Ranger. The person makes for the breakdown lane then takes off. So, me being me, I chase him. Catch up to him, got his plate and thought to myself I am good. Pull off the road and called the cops... Well last time I do that. They traced the car to the owners, who said they did not have the car. They said they "think" they son had their car. Asked if they wanted to report the car stolen, they said no, which in my mind makes them responsible. Turns out their son was also wanted by the law on other charges. Bottom line.... I had to pay my deductible, $500, to get my truck fixed as they never did find the car and my insurance company at the time did not want to fight for me, do not use Progressive. It was not worth my $500 to go after the owners, who I probably could have gotten my money from.

Next time (if there is), I chase and keep chasing until the cops find us tearing up the streets.

One cool part of the story was a couple people on the freeway took the time to call the police and explained what they just witnessed, at least there are some honest people out there. It is possible you may have witness reports at the police station and the police are wondering why the owner of the Viper is not calling......

Carl,
I did not have anything to write the plate down. It may have been 5BAH347 or even 5ABH347. If I was sure I had it right I would have called it in.

If you have the make of car and color - usually a partial tag ID will find the car - the fact that you were in a parking lot, may make it a civil -instead of a criminal offense. Either way you could take the driver to court.

You might also get lucky and find him there in a couple of weeks. Hopefully he works close by and will return later. Of course by then all evidence will be gone, in fact it already may be buffed out. However you can always get the plate then and decide what form of justice will satisfy your pain.

*** man that really ***** sorry to hear about that ****.

I would call up and give the 2 plate #'s you have and say the type of car it was imn sure they can get a match on the pr!ck.

I would not fix the damage until you find out whats going on keep it for proof (I know its hard to look at knowing you can fix it yourself)

Good luck and I hope everything works out for you.

not worth the time getting petty cash from him to fix the damage... find where he lives and take a bat to his f#$@ing beemer. I HATE Fu@#ers that park next to my snake when I go out of the way to park by myself. What are they trying to accomplish by doing that? Hoping the chicks will think it's their other car?

May want to check with the fast food place and see if they have any video tapes of their parking lot. The sooner the better as they tend to retape over them.

Wow! I am sorry to hear about that. Really makes you lose faith in people hearing a story like this.

I would definitely turn it in. That quarter size paint chip can only get worse with humidity working its way under the paint. Who knows what damage occured to the paint that you cannot see right now. If anything, maybe it will teach the older gentleman a lesson for the future.

Good luck!

hate to say it, but i'm with Warfang on this one... track him down yourself and f-up his beemer!

i was out to dinner a couple of weeks ago, and parked the viper WAY out of the way of other cars/traffic etc. i couldn't believe the a$$ that went out of his way to park his suburban on the white line next to my car, then have four adults pile out of his truck. i had to pull my car out of the spot to let my wife in, as he had parked so close on the passenger side we couldn't get the door open. i couldn't believe it! people can just be a$$holes  , no doubt. fortunately, there was no damage, this time. . .

my 2 cents.

I always park across two spaces. Then no one gets near the snake.
I figure if I get booked (which is highly unlikely) it is still cheaper and less hassle than what you are now going through.
Go back same time next week and see if he returns. People are creatures of habit. Good luck.

I'm with Treed and Warfang. An eye for an eye. Bust up his BMW, maybe that'll teach him how it feels to be hit and run. Old people have a bad habit of hitting cars and then driving off claiming they didnt know they hit anything. It happened to a friend of mine a year or 2 ago. Luckily, she saw it and stopped the woman before she left the parking lot and called the cops.

I just want to know what they are thinking when they go out of their way to park next to a car that OBVIOUSLY wants to be left alone... it's like a creepy guy that has to use the ****** next to yours when there are 10 of them lined up and nobody else around.

Turn him in. Hit and runs should not go without punishment! If he had stopped and you were able to fix the damage without problems, that might have been a different story.

BINGO!

He'll be back. Before you go bonkers on his Beemer with a bat, report the hit and run, find the guy and ask him to make reparations for the damage. Otherwise, If all else fails...
