So I have a vibration that shows its ugly head at about 80 mph. I decided that step one would be to take the tires off and check the balance. I took them to COSTCO, because believe it or not they probably put the most care into their work for a tire shop. Nitrogen in the tires as well as torque wrenching by hand twice. Anyways they simply could not get the rear wheels on the machine. First they tried to shim them away from the machine but they would simply not seat properly with their adapters. They somehow were able to do the front wheels and one wheel was significantly off and one was perfect. They charged me a whopping eight dollars for the service, I love COSTCO.
So I'm bummed they couldn't do the job and I'm on my way to another tire shop. It's Sunday and most seem to be closed, I find "Just Tires" is open and proceed with caution. First thing the guy tells me is that COSTCO guys don't know what their doing, thats indicator one that he's full of @&$#. He claims they've done many Vipers, so I say okay, then he tells me that it costs $36 to balance two tires. Mind you we're talking about two tires that are already mounted washed waxed and in the back of my pickup. He says nobody will touch a Viper for less, now I'm getting really annoyed, but I wanted to check the balance so I agree to the price.
I look at their machine and it's the same one that COSTCO uses. He claims it's no problem, and within one minute it's obvious he's having the same problem COSTCO had. He jurry rigs it in place and it's wobbling because it's not seating on the back of the hub properly. He claims he can correct for it and balance it anyway. I'm like take the rim off right now! Your not doing anything else.
Long story to my point, who knows what is required (proper machinery) to do these wheels justice. Personally I believe If I wasn't as mechanically inclined as I am that they would have done some B.S. balance job and handed them back to me. Any first hand factual input would be appreciated, Thanks.

Take them to a 4X4 truck off road shop. They are geared up to do large wheels. I'm lucky my neighbor owns 5 tire stores and has equipped them with the latest tire mounting, balancing and alignment.

All I can say is if this place only has a spin balancer, then they will likely never get it balanced to your liking. I had a local firestone shop spin balance some brand new BBS wheels and Avon MS550's. There was a noticeable shimmy at all speeds up to 70mph where it was most prominent. I took them back and they did it again and said if it was not right, they would clamp the weights to the outside of the front face of the wheels. Uh...no thank you, with a $3200 set of BBS's. The second time was a little better but still noticeable at 70mph. I should have known better. Spin balancers just aren't accurate enough for wide wheels with wide high performance low profile tires. So, I took it to a specialty shop that had a Hunter Roadforce balancer and everything was perfect the very first time. Sure, it was more expensive but it is very accurate. Do a search on the Roadforce and you will gain a lot of info on why it is so superior to spin balancing.

I took my ACR wheels to Just Tires as well, and it did cost more to do mounting and balancing (maybe $100 for everything) but they did a good job, and most places couldn't handle the wide rims, plus their balancing was often using old bubble equipment. :(

The one big thing to insist on is that they don't put balancing weights on the outside lip of the rim.
I know that it sounds totally obvious, but many of these kids have just made the leap from MacDonalds University, and may not know any better.

For me it was worth spending a bit more and being confident that the job wasn't messed up.

Bigsnake it's not about the money. It's about finding a place that actually does the work correctly and with care. Maybe Canada is a utopia where all tire shops are honest and really care about your family like the Michelin man suggests. In SoCal it's about slammin the product out and it's a miracle if you actually deal with someone who speaks English.

Got Vnum thanks a bunch I actually live in Simi. DC was going to be my next call. I was really curious to see if I had a balance problem. Thanks for responding guys.
