This is probably a stupid question but I would rather sound dumb than screw something up.

As you can tell my battery is dead-can I hook up a charger to the under hood connection to recharge it or should I remove the rear tire and connect the charger directly to the battery?

Well, this just happened to me. I was told that you should not charge via under the hood. But this does not make much sense. Why would it be ok to jump, but not charge? I was told that it has something to do with the pcm (SP). So i took cover off and charged that way. But after doing this twice in 3 weeks, I bought one of these http://www.batterymart.com/batteryminder.php
Works great. You install it under hood and mount it so plug is inside the driverside gill. Move car in garage, plug it in and your good to go. This is a form of a trickle charge, but it turns off and on automatically.

The video that came with my car says that you can charge under the hood. The batteryminder is a good unit. Don't use a normal trickle charger for long periods because it will boil your battery fluid.
