Do you have another car? Go outside and run your finger through the exhaust pipe and see if you get some soot like the Viper and compare.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. The Viper dumps extra fuel. In my garage with my 1994 and my 1998 Viper, there are black sooty marks by the exhaust pipe outlets on the floor when I start my car up.

Hope you are getting a good deal on it.

My 95 Viper does the same thing. There is black soot on the wall from the exaust when I start it.
My RX7 does the same thing. It seems to me to be no big deal, unless I am missing something.

If you buy the car enjoy, it is definitely a wonderful experience owning one.

Yeah. Its just carbon deposits. Stick your face in front of the exhaust pipe and have your wife revv the car up. You will brobably get a mouth full of black soot.

In the good old bad old pre-cat days exhausts use to be stinking and sooty black. Now however apart from initial start-up when the cats are cold, hence those marks on walls, the exhaust should be fairly clean inside and not too sooty. Even my hi-flo cats are keeping my exhaust cleanish

I cant see how there would be anything clean in the exhaust pipe.

Isnt exhaust explosion smoke from igniting gas?

Iv'e started a few grilles with 89 octane in my life and have had enough SOOT to top my burgers with.

<innermonologue>so thats whats wrong with me</innermonologue>

The cats mission is to remove as many contaminants as possible or at least convert them to a less obnoxious form, this it does well. As its precious metal content is 'used' up in its life it works less efficiently. Oil burning engines will kill a cat sooner as would leaded fuel and the wrong additives, ie some octane boosters. But a good cat will mask the signs of a smoky engine, for a while.
