Brake job help???

The car: 1994 Dodge Viper, stock brake system

The project: removing all four rotors, having them machined, replacing the rear pads with EBC Greens to match the front pads

The problem: I have the rear calipers completely disconnected from the car (bolts and e-brake system). However, I still cannot remove the caliper assembly. The problem is that the brake pads are hitting the burr along the outside edge of the rotor as I try to slide the assembly off.

How do I get the piston to relax to allow the pads to further separate from the rotor allowing me to slide the assembly off???

a nice rubber mallet works nicely, or a file along the edge of the rotors.


if you have it all apart you should be able to slide the whole rotor and caliper off the car, and then a few light taps with a rubber mallet will work great.

I leave the rear caliper completely in place, remove the pads, then tip the rotor out at the rear and I'm done...install in reverse after turning piston clockwise to re-seat...paying close attention to position the anti-rattle springs PROPERLY as pads/pin installed.

Wow, never heard of wear that bad on the rotor that causes a lip to catch the pads as you try to slip the caliper off. The easiest thing I can think of is to disconnect the brake line. This will relieve lots of pressure to where you should be able to use a thin screw driver or something to get the pads to open.

I have not changed the pads on my Viper, but wow, you can get the pads off without removing the caliper???

its really not that bad, just a small burr, but the piston and pads are barely retracted.

youre talking about the fronts i assume? I use a small punch and hammer to tap it out.

Did you get the rears off?

You can take the pads out after using a drift punch to remove the pin...tap on the SMALL end of the pin to remove (one pin on rear caliper...2 pins on the front caliper...and. of course, removing the clips)...to get the REAR rotor off, you DO NOT need to remove caliper. To remove front rotor, one needs to remove caliper. Call me if you like.

I'm talking about the rears, fronts are fine, no issues, I just can't see how the pin on the rear caliper comes out to release the brake pads.

I just got home from work so I'm going to go fight with it for a little.

EDIT: Just like "Eric H" said you can knock the pin out with a punch, I just didn't see the little hole at the back of the caliper (talking about the rears still). I just bolted the caliper back to hold it firmly, put a small punch into the hole and tapped it with a hammer, the pin slid out about 1/4 of an inch and I just pulled it the rest of the way with a pair of pliars...PROBLEM SOLVED...
