Does someone know if the rear brake caliper piston on an 02 GTS compresses like the front ones or do you need a special tool to turn it in. Had trouble with the rear but didn't want to force it.
You need to rotate it clockwise to compress it, or you will damage it. DC recommends a special tool, but I did it with a stout pair of needle nose pliers. Hard to start the rotation, but it will go once you get it started.
BE SURE to line up the "notches" on the piston with the boss on the caliper once you have turned them in or you may cause damage....as noted in 01 and 02 Viper Service Manuals.
It's a "Miller Tool" ( 8807-1 and 8807-2...and YOU supply the 3/8" ratchet and extension)as shown in the manual...can ask Chuck Tator or JonB to order one for you. That rear caliper piston is a slight PITA to manage since one has to remove it from the bracket, hold caliper in one hand, hold tool (with several components) in the other hand, and adjust/turn ratchet to retract piston with one's "third hand"...but the tool DOES make it easier once one gets the hang of it...at least in my opinion...and there is a much less chance of lacerating the dust boot with the correct tool than using the needle nose pliers method. Hell, stop by this weekend and I'll help you...also goes easier with a midrise lift.
