Good point on the cost of getting into a Viper, it is cheaper.

The trick is on the resale end of the equation. As soon as that speedo is removed from the car, and mileage is no longer taken at "face" value of what the gauge says, value of the car drops in the neighborhood of 10,000 bucks, call Bill P, he tossed out that figure on a trade to him. That's not to say that figure is set in stone, merely a guide to those that are fussy, some buyers may not care. I surely would wonder who did the speedo swap, where, when, who was present at the time, where did the new speedo come from, what was it's mileage?

On a Neon (even LX!!,haha) no big deal, on a Viper very big deal!

No flames please, just an observation from my one year of research......isn't that how it goes guys?

Once air-bags came out, I believe the Canadian and US Vipers are the same as far as DOT (occupant safety standards) and EPA (emissions) are concerned.

What is different is :
The 4th digit in the VIN.
Canadian cars have DRLs, which you can leave on or disconnect.
Speedo, oil pressure, temperature gauges are metric (but don't *have* to be changed.)

Save the old speedo, take pictures side by side when they're both out? Removing the dash to install it is quick, easy, painless, should not cause any owner discomfort. And maybe somebody can confirm the ECU records mileage that cannot be fudged, so the odometer issue shouldn't be that big a deal?

(learned from importing my '94, which I thought only cost me about $400 from A-1 Import-Export)

import info

My understanding is that once you change your Speedo DC will void your warrenty.

Anybody have any additional information on this?

Yes, I've heard the deals are great. How much does it cost to have everything converted to US spec?

How do you get it imported into the US?

What companies do the conversion?

I had ask this question on another thread that was not getting much attention so here goes again.

Would a Viper (98 GTS) that was bought in Canada but has been in the US for some time, be valued at less than an American Spec GTS. The reason I am asking is I am looking at a Red 98 GTS that is presently registered in the US, but the price seems very low for the Milage and year in comparison to other GTS's I have been looking at, it was originally a Canada Spec Car.
Just trying to make sense of it and determine if it is worth flying to the other coast to look at it.

Thanks,
Ed

Further to the speedo and dealer warranty issue; when I switched speedos and went in for a replacement radiator (side tank solder leak) they asked about the warranty, which was purchased in Canada. The Canadian warranty system is on a computer in Canada, the US system is on a computer in the US and they didn't talk to each other. So while the US computer knew of the car and the repair history, there's no record of the warranty. The US dealer had to do all that paperwork by mail, which of course, takes longer.

There was no hassle about the odometer, however. I showed my picture of the metric and english odometers, told them about how many miles would be on the car now, and that was that. I thought that they could check the odometer from the ECU, but they never tried it. Anybody comment on this?

I hesitate to write this, but one of the questions asked is will resale be the same, and the answer is no. Because the car is Imported to Canada and then returned , it does carry some unintended baggage. The conversion to miles and other concerns have caused many dealers and buyers to regret the situation. There are alot of converted cars that show discrepancies when run through the Chrysler computer ( usually tied to mileage issues ) and it is an unbelievable nightmare to get it fixed. In some states the way their mileage statements read, the car must be listed as " Mileage Unknown." This destroys resale on a Viper. These are just of few of the main concerns, but as a Dealer we don't want to appear to be after our own agenda. This caution is being placed by me ( not the Dealership ), a fellow Viper owner, as a note of caution to those who decide on this.
