I know this subject has probably been beat up but here goes anyway. Have 2000 GTS. Are cats flanged/bolted or welded in place? To remove and insert straight pipe, can I bolt in or need to weld in? What size piping/flanges do I need? Not concerned about emissions or sound, but side sills seem to get very hot. Any other repurcussions??

The cats are held in place via band clamps. How an after market straight pipe goes in depends on who you get it from or if you get it made, you specify how it should hook up.

Repurcussions are check engine light and possible rich running engine in safe mode.

Grayman, This weekend, I performed this "operation" on my 96 GTS. I purchased 4 of the 2 1/2 inch "borla" clamps from Sean Roe and installed approx. 24 inches of straight pipe in place of the stock cats. One end of the pipe should be swelled to fit over the forward head pipe, the other end fits inside of the stock resonator. I reused the old clamps on the resonator and used 2 of the borla clamps on each side of the forward pipe. I cut the cats off with a saws-all just in front of the forward weld. I am pleased with the results. I noticed a definite improvement in SOTP feel, it is easier to break the tires loose in first or second gear. The sound is also much more fitting to the car without being too harsh. Yes there is more of an exhaust smell from outside the car at idle, but not much different from any of the older performance cars I have owned. A definite great "bang for the buck" mod.
