Cat\'s - how do you get to them?

Do you have to remove the side sills?

I can not find a step by step guide on how to get to the cats and remove them.

Anybody know of a tech guide to do this?

that guide is perfect! thanks!

I just want to put in staight pipes in place of the cats.

Do you think it would pass a sniff test?

Hey Monnieh, I am the guy you talked to about the ACR a few times. Try not to listen to some of these guys that don't have experience with this. Both my 99 & 00 passed the sniffer at idle and 3000RPMS with no cats. The key to it is to have the car hot when it is tested. Not to let it sit over over 30 min and then test it. The PCM will relearn and the car will burn clean again. If the PCM wouldn't lean it back out then you would not get the horse power increase. My car picked up 11RWH and 10RWT. Also, replace your plugs after you remove the cats. This netted me the biggest power gain. Gapped a 35. Let me know if this helps.

Question: Are you saying that the engine was running to rich with the cats? What is the PCM relearning and how is it relearning to make the engine run clean? Inquiring minds need to know!

Hey Rich, you where one of the guys that replied to my post a few months ago about removing cats. Either you or someone else said my viper would not pass emissions, would run rich, and would have a terrible smell. Well, the car has less of a smell than it had with the cats when I get on it. There is no more soot on my rear facia. Passed emissions. Air/ Fuel on the dyno at 5500Rpms is 11.8. And the car does not have a terrible smell to it. Seems to me that the PCM has compensated to lean the car back out a WOT so it would not run (RICH). I'am not an expert like you but, I did have some help from Sean Roe.

BE CAREFUL ! The 'answers' do not apply across all years.
THE YEAR MATTERS!

Generality for Gen-2: Run catless and risk idle surge all years, check lites 2000+, and pump out 8.0L of NOXious fumes every other RPM. Stinks. ECU adaptive will try to corrcet, but based on the miles and condition of your O-2 sensors it could be a MAYBE. Legal? Not in 50 states. Sounds kinda ratty, too.

You might fool the sniff-tech, or end up fooling youself.

Option 1 : Viper-specific HF Cats in 3 flow ranges are available. They Provide all the flow you need, run perfectly, cool sills, and even pass CA !

Option 2: O-2 simulator kits cost almost as much as cats, but are not legal. And still stink.

Re: Cat\'s - how do you get to them?

Listen to JonB. I went no cats for a while, and regretted it. I have a 98GTS, and everything JonB mention in the previous post happened. Engine light, idle surge, ratty sound - even with Corsa exhaust, and stink-stink-stink. You will only lose a few HP with High-Flow cats, and none of the problems will exist. The only advantage to no cats is:

1.) A couple more ponies, 3 or 4 vs. High-Flow cats.
2.) Extremely cool side sills
3.) I guess it's possible to save a few bucks, but not much after you buy the sims and straight pipes.

IMHO, High-Flow cat are a no-brainer.

Good Luck...

Re: Cat\'s - how do you get to them?

thanks for all the input. I just talked to Bobby Archer and he said NO to removing the cats.

He did say that all you needed to do was cut the pipes off and replace the pipes going into the stock cats with 3 inch and you get the same result.

I do not want to argue with Mr. Archer but that sounds wrong as the interals on the high flows are suppose to be redsigned for better flow (right?). Is the exhaust on my 97rt 2.5 all the way through or are parts of it 3inch?

I am confused now.

I don't have cats on my GTS. Sounds great. No complaints about the smell. You're biggest worry will be the flames discoloring the rear bumper.

First of all, I didn't respond to you about removing your cats. It was someone else. Second, I still don't understand what you are saying. You remove the cats and it runs leaner. But on the dyno @ 5500 rpm your at a 11.8 ratio. That is very RICH. I would love to see a copy of your emissions inspection report. At that rate your HC PPM would have to be over 1500 and your CO % would be around 9%. What did Sean tell you?

monnieh- you have 2.5" all the way.
