It'll buff out.

Glad that wall was made of rubber. With all these accidents its glad to hear no one has been hurt, knock on wood.
Although now it really looks like a race car.

The car will be ok, more importantly you are alright. The car can be fixed, whereas you...are irreplaceable. Yes it is all part of racing. Once again, glad you weren't hurt.

Been there, done that. Surprising, most of it will buff out. Even 99.9% of that blue paint (do all tire walls have this?) that appeared to be embedded into my black paint came off with the factory paint underneath, intact.

Idunno - I think the tire rubber gives the car some really strong character lines. Red Badge of Something-or-other, rugged individualism and all that - you know?

Glad you came through it basically unscathed!

As for the tire deal - I haven't driven the Sports, but the MXX3s will get greasy over 140F. (That takes me about 1-2 laps, depending on the track and ambient temps.) The only Michelin street tires that like hot weather tracking are the old XGT-Zs, but you can't find them anymore. If you're running the Michelin Challenge at Viper Days, then everyone has the same issue. Tracking with street rubber is good practice, because it translates directly with street performance.

Other than those situations, I recommend DOT race rubber or scrubs when at the track. If you have to drive your car to and from, then find a buddy to haul an extra set of tires for you to play on, or just don't push the stock tires so hard.

Thanks for the comments on tires. I keep putting off the decision to get a set of race wheels and tires (cost v. usage), but it seems like the more times I go out to a track, the more I'm starting to notice things like the tires getting slippery. Which I guess is the whole point of going to the track, eh?

Cheers.

You'd be amazed what a Purner/Hoosier combo does for your lap times on the track..

That was said to me by several as soon as I brought it into the pits.

Yes, the tires get greasy but drivers feel them "going" and need to drive accordingly. I'm man enough to admit that I went to far. That said, don't let something like this discourage any of you from taking your Viper to the track. Many drivers stay within their limits and come away unscathed. Believe me, I wouldn't have driven my RT/10 the same way I drove # 34 at Sebring.

It was a great day nonetheless. It's been a great year!!!

Good times.

Hey OC, that's easy to do when you have two Vipers. If that was your only one you would be crying like a *****.

Re: Chuck shows a tire wall who\'s boss

Interesting comment: "Michelins grease up..."

I've never heard that said before, but I've experiences the tires getting slippery during lapping on the track. I was always told that street tires don't go "off" in the same way as slicks and that I was imagining it, but it feels pretty similar. Anyone shed some light on this?

Oh, and to keep it on topic, I'm glad the driver is unhurt and best wishes on the snake-healing.

Shame the tires were not yellow. All you have to do is put some dolphins on it and sell it for $250,000

Oh shoot, a technical question... I'm more of a seat of the pants guy than a professional but i'll take a crack at it;

I believe the slip angle (grip) of the Michelin Street Tire starts out much lesser than the Hoosier and has the distinct disadvantage of getting overworked or outside it's effective heat range at a lesser temperature.. The Michelin also is a much heavier tire with a thicker carcass which slows the cooling process..

Chuck, you are lucky. I know that's not too refreshing to hear when you damage a car like that, but it could have been worse. These are VERY EXPENSIVE toys to race and when you wreck them hard, you pay hard. I'm glad to see your fine and in good spirits.

Regards,
Doug Levin
