I think the best deal is the INNOVA 3100a sold at Walmart.
It's only ~$100. It is confirmed to be compatible with the 08 Viper's CAN bus.

YES...I bought an Actron model CP9175 for my 08 to read and clear codes. They have 5 versions at Autozone from $40 -$250, I bought the middle model and has more than i need @ $80. All 5 versons will read and erase codes on an 08 Viper.

FYI, A little trick I learned from an SRT engineer
while they were trouble shooting my 08. To view the existing codes, cycle the key 4 times ending in the on position. Once complete the odometer will display the codes

I was aware of the ability to "read" the code (though not the precise means as you described VA). I'd like to have a reader that can also clear a code (and the check engine light). I'm going to check on the one suggested.

REMEMBER...OBD II is a mandated Federal standard from 1996 on ...so, any OBD II code reader can give you the generic "P" codes.

With the CAN bus situation on the 2008's, however...you'll need more than a DRB III if you want to look deeper into the Chrysler-specific codes...you will need a StarSCAN or a Starmobile & laptop.
