We decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and cruised to Atchison, Kansas on Sunday. On the way we stopped at Lewis & Clark State Park. Lewis & Clark camped here in 1804 on the Fourth of July.
This city of Atchison was founded in 1854 and is the birthplace of Amelia Earhart. It is located on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River. Incredible views in the fall season.
This is the bridge coming over the river to town. Yes, it was top down all the way!
This is the post office built in 1894. It resembles a castle and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The brick streets are still intact in many areas.
Many homes in Atchison are said to be haunted and they have a haunted homes tour every year. This is one we found called the Gargoyle (BP Waggener) house built in 1884. Weggener was a lawyer and politician. Most of the time gargoyles are put up to fend off evil but it's said Weggener made his wealth by having a pact with the devil and the gargoyles were placed there to honor the pact.
There are some really interesting gargoyles at the top. Watching all the tourists. Waiting to eat them.....
In wonder if they have ever been hit by lightning. Bet it makes their eyes glow.
This is the separate guest house/garage for the main house.
