Well for those folks with a few miles on their car you might
have noticed that it gets harder and harder to keep your
wheels clean. Seem'd like I was cleaning them every time I
got in the car. So this weekend I took the wheels off of the
car and polished and cleaned the backside of them. And also
found out why they were getting so dirty so quickly.

Its the upper and lower control arms..... check them out,
they both have a half inch channel that runs the lenght of
the arms ( two channels per control arm ) and guess what they
like to do... yep, collect brake dust, and I'm telling you
alot of it too. No wonder the wheels kept getting dirty so
soon. The dust was just collecting there to be blown onto the
wheels. Car wash wand would't even touch it.. you
have to get to them with the wheels off of the car.
I took all four wheels off, cleaned them and the control arms
free of brake dust and am very happy to report a few test drives and the wheels are much cleaner after the runs now... :)

You're correct with the green pads... just don't forget to
clean the control arms during the install of your new green
pads

You wouldn't want to install the pads and still get the
wheels dirty from all the dust left on the arms....

the ebc greens are nice, but the fact that they are literally green is a problem.. you can see the green pads between the spokes of my wheels, and they totally crash with my red car.. it was cool during christmas season, but now its getting old..

Pssst! Just a little secret..... you can buy yourself a spray can of temp resistant paint..... and it takes about a minute to turn some green backing plates into any color you want. Some people think I've been running EBC reds on my car at the track, but....... Shhh!..... don't tell nobody!

Why do you prefer Green EBC's on the front and Red EBC's on the rear? Is it because the Reds are more aggressive, and help the braking bais in the Viper?

Thanks...

Kingman,
I have a set of reds for the front that I've never used. Any success with Reds at the track? I was suprised to read you mention using Greens. I guess they would work O.K., but might need replacing before the weekend is over. I have been using the stock pads for the track and greens for the street. I have no good reason for not trying the reds. Should I?

Joe, trying to figure proper pad selection for the track is a real science. It depends on SO many factors. How's your braking style? How long are the run sessions? What's the track like? Lots of high speed straights into low speed hairpins? Or not? Figuring all this out can be just like asking how long a bar of soap will last in the shower, or how long will that roll of toilet paper............

We have many guys like Viper Days Super Stock Champion Tom Glenn who uses Yellow fronts and only Green rears..... and is mostly the man to beat. But, we also have people on Blue fronts and Yellow rears who are close to exceeding even the limits of THOSE high heat ranges at times. However, if you are pretty serious and fast, for most higher speed tracks the Yellows might be a better choice for you. As long as you HAVE the Reds, you might try them. Just keep a watchful eye on temperature and wear.

One more thing....... while awesome drivers like Tom Glenn have the experience and skill to handle situations like this, EBC does NOT recommend using a higher friction pad on the REAR than on the front. Too much grip on the rear is a sure way to make sure that you're going to be facing the wrong way when you car hits something!
