I just read somewhere that if you disconnect your alternator you can pick up 1-2 tenths in the 1/4 mile. Is this true? Has anyone here tried that?

Hey Sean, can't comment on Viper specific losing the belt as I am still hunting for a bluw/whie GTS myself, I live across the river in Windsor, wanna sell yours, hahaha.........
In the mustang days we used a short serpentine belt that bypassed the power steering pump and air pump, that was good for a tenth or so, hard to benchline the mod when it's a small improvement, nonetheless it is there, dyno proven in the mags at the time.....
For the true diehards if you were not lined up to stage 20 cars deep we would pop the belt right off for the run, or wait and pull it when you were a car or 2 from running the 1/4, then toss it back on on the return lane!
Had it down to a science with the spare tire lug wrench on the tensioner, to the point I would drop it on the street for a race if I thought it was tight, oops did I say street and race in the same sentence?????ugh........
Dropping it completely was good for a few tenths for sure, approx.15-20 hp gain, "parasatic loss" actually, it's called that your saving as the motor is making it and then losing it, free hp, gotta love it.
Hopefully some Viper Gurus can comment I would interested to hear the Viper application of this.
Ryan
hope to see you on the streets of MI when I get the GTS, ever hit Royal Oak or Pontiac with the car, any problems, just wondering?

FYI,

An alternator disconnect was worth 1 fender in the quarter mile in my 13.6/106 mph Supercharged Studebaker at night.

I imagine you could do a HP calculation based on current draw and some efficiency correction factor... (I'm sure the Viper draws a lot more current than the Studebaker at night.)

I'm confused here. There is just one belt driving everything. Are you saying to un-bolt the a/c compressor? I think if you bypassed it you would need a different size belt.

Hey Ryan (GENXGTS), I have been known to frequent the Royal Oak area in my Viper, LOL. I have never taken it to Pontiac and probably wouldn't. I always valet park it myself and have never had a problem with vandals because it is right in plain view where me or the valets can keep an eye on it. I have also been known to frequent the Windsor ballet, if you know what I mean. Gotta love those totally **** bars you got over there in the fine country of Canada. Ohhh, Canada. Hope you get your Viper soon. You'll love it. I looked for my Viper for awhile and finally locating one in the Chicago area 2 years ago. You'll find one eventually and the way the economy is going you'll probably get a good deal on one right now.

There shouldn't be a problem with the belt turning accessories that have no load applied to them.

If the AC clutch is disengaged, there is little loss.

As far as the alternator, you merely switch off the field voltage.

Oops, that is for an old muscle alternator with external regulation.

With the high output of modern internal regulated alternators, a cutout relay would have to be substantial since this would be the output wire from the alternator.

There may be an internal modification that would interrupt the field that could be made.

You would have to disassemble the alternator, and learn the circuit.

It still should be worth at least a fender.
