If your car has an air-bag, it has a "black box" of sorts, as the airbag is constantly recording your speed over the last 10-20 seconds or so. This data can be downloaded after a crash.

In addition to above, I have been told that so called "tattletale" codes can be captured using a DRB-III ONLY IF A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT has been set. One therefore wonders whether or not a talented computer **** couldn't indeed write a program that could discover said "codes" without the airbag deployment or MIL being set...my bet is YES.

Big brother is here, now. The GM black boxes gather the most data. There are still many legal questions on how the information from them can be used..... Some are trying to make it so they can be turned off by owners as they are considering them an invasion of privicy. Some are saying the data cannot be used in court unless the owner of the vehicle was formally informed the data was being gathered. Some rental cars have BB's that gather data during the entire rental period, for a while a few companies had written in their legalese at the bottom of the contrats that they would levy fees if speed limits were exceeded, really.

Here is an article on data showing up in court rooms:

Black Box Data Showing Up In Courtrooms

The airbag info is the most interesting, in the article they say:

"The highway safety agency said in June that requiring black boxes was unnecessary but proposed that by 2008 the auto industry should outfit their vehicles voluntarily with recorders that would collect 42 pieces of accident data, including speed, braking, seat belt use and the time required for air bags to deploy."

The racing series have pretty amazing data recorders, they use the info from accidents to improve safety of the race cars.

Nascar Black Boxes

I'm pretty sure the GM boxes record the date for like 30 second BEFORE the accident.

After reading the articles above I can see no downside to these devices. Face it folks,if any of us cause an accident out of carelessness then we are wrong. The data recorder will defend you if you are in the right, and will force ownership of your mistake if you are in the wrong. It is similar to the reason laws were created, to govern those who would harm others.

Yeah, and a policeman can be assigned to you to make sure you don't ever speed, don't download ****, don't fail to pick up your dog poo, etc. etc. until you do exactly as you are told subject...er...citizen.

Is there any way to turn all this recording off or at least disable it.

Yeah Slaughterj , I guess if everyone were as responsible as you and never lied about their actions we would not need police, courts, attorneys, or even parents. D@mn, that would make the world a nice place to live. But human nature is to deceive, lie and cheat. I never said the device would be nice to have as a monitoring tool with RF tx/rx to allow big brother to watch our every move. But it would be nice to flame the @sshole who destroys your car by proving he was at fault with his own telemetry.

It's just one more step in stripping one's alleged rights of privacy.
