Do K/N filters now fit?

I bought K/N filters yesterday for my 1995 Viper. I probably won't be able to install these for a few months (Michigan) but wondered if they modified the filter to not pop off the clips. I read the writeup here about grinding down the edge of the airbox because the K/N filter doesn't compress as much as the factory one and the edges are the same size. Did they make it smaller to compensate? I'd rather not modify my airbox.

Had a pair fitted in the summer, no mods needed all the clips fitted securely, and they're still on. Worth checking with a 95 owner though just in case

Tried K&N's on my 94 and had to eventually slightly modify the air box per the written instructions. It was no big deal, really!! No problem with fit in my 97 GTS.

I contacted K&N about the clip problem on my '94, because I thought they would like to know (after all I shouldn't have to modify my expensive sports car to install what is suppose to be a premium filter, that replaces the stock filter). They kinda p1ssed me off, because the contact I was talking to, said problem? We have never heard of any problems!
Then I referred them to this site, later I got back to them, because they must have forgotten to get back to me like they said, and I was told by Murillo, Lorenzo
E-mail Address(es):
[email protected], that, ya ya that's just the internet, they can say anything.
Needless to say I wasn't impressed. I've been buying K&N filters for over 20 years. That has now come to a stop!
Buy Sean Roe filters and return the K&N's if you haven't used them.
I hear Seans Filters have more media room for better flow and cleaning anyhow.

Rats! Is there "any" way to modify the filter? I've got an original car and can't modify the box. I know that is stupid but I might as well not even think about it because I know I won't.

I would take back the filters and go to Roe but I got them with a gift certificate to Ramchargers and I have no need for anything else they carry.

Can I take a table saw or something and trim down the lip of the filter? I think it is because the lip is just as thick as the factory one but it doesn't compress as much due to the material.

From what I remember, not ALL early RT/10's "pop" the clips when you put 'em on (I know mine didn't). I believe Jon B once suggested putting some duct tape or other vinyl tape around the border of the ajoining pieces so worse case scenario, the clips will still be there...even if they pop.

Put a set of K&N's on my 95 R/T three weeks ago. Took about 20 minutes, no mods necessary. There were some missing clips prior to my starting, however, I found them at a "chevy" dealer through a posting on this site with a part number.

I too have heard good things about Roe's filters. FWIW, there is no way to tell that the inner lip of the airbox has been modified without taking a very close look when the lid and filters are out. It's really not a big deal!!

I tried modifying the lip of the filter, and ended up with a big cut on my thumb

I would not recommend it. My clips were popping off like grasshoppers! (96 RT/10). I am gonna go with the Roe filters, can't believe K&N responded that way...Maybe a few other folks should call, ask for the same person you dealt with, and maybe they will get the point!

ALso, do a search and get the part number for the clips from a GM dealer. They usually have em in stock..I lost a couple on the road, then got fed up!

Thanks Bigfoot...I definitely checked out that article and also bought 4 clips from a Chevy dealer right after I bought my car.

My interest now is to find a way to modify the filter. It appears that the filter is too thick since it doesn't compress like the factory one. I think I'll try a table saw or dremel to cut a groove in the filter that matches the airbox.

I don't want to modify the airbox because:
1. Once modified, you can't go back to original filter
2. I don't have the heart to do anything to the Viper that can't be switched back
