You can look up the gear ratio for each trans gear in your owner's manual.

Then, multiply whatever trans gear's ratio you want to know the max mph for, by the rear end ratio.
For example 3.07 if your rear gear is stock.

That'll be the overall gear ratio in that particular trans gear

Next:

1. multiply your RPM times the TIRE DIAMETER

2. Next multiply the overall gear ratio times 336

Divide answer 1. by answer 2. to get MPH@ your RPM for that trans gear

To find tire diameter, chalk a short line at the bottom of your tire and on the garage floor next to that line on the tire. Roll the car foward or backward until that line on the tire again is near the floor. Mark another line on the floor, measure the distance between those lines and divide that distance by 3.14159.

From the Viper Registry Tab (at the top of this page) specifications section:

DRIVETRAIN
Transmission: Borg Warner T-56 6-speed manual
Gear Ratio's: Gear Ratio Overall Ratio (Rpm)Mph
1st 2.66:1 8.17:1 (6000) 56
2nd 1.78:1 5.46:1 (6000) 83
3rd 1.30:1 3.99:1 (6000) 114
4th 1.00:1 3.07:1 (6000) 148
5th 0.74:1 2.27:1 est (4950) 165
6th 0.50:1 1.54:1 est(3360) 165
Reverse 2.90:1 N/A N/A

Final drive ratio: 3.07:1
Engine rpm @ 60 mph in 6th: 1220

Hope this helps.

FE 065:

Thanks for the formula. I've owned my Viper for about a year and have always suspected that I did not have stock gears - even though the seller insisted it was "Bone Stock" (he may have not known as he was the 2nd or 3rd owner). At 60 mph in 6th my Tach reads about 1500 rpms - when per the specs it should be 1220 rpms.

Using your formula, it looks like I may actually have 3:73 gears. The 3:73 gears make for more fun usable driving - but the added shifting can be a pain - which explains why I often start in 2nd and skip to 4th. Also explains why I am so happy with the new B & M Ripper Shifter that I just installed - making shifting FUN again.

I put 3.73s in my '94 RT/10 8yrs ago or so. It certainly does make for more spirited driving!

I didn't notice an increase in shifting - you always end up in 4th or higher anyway.

It does look like you've got 3.73s doesn't it? :)
