I took off my rear **** and also the side resonators. I replaced the resonators with the ultra flow dynomax muffs. Basically it's a straight thru design. The sound isn't much louder than when I just had the resonators on, but it's just not plain loud enough for me. It has a nice deep throaty sound, but I want more.

If I just ran pipes all the way back would it be too raspy? How can I make it louder? I don't think the Borla's are going to be any louder than what I have...the set up is simliar to the borlas. Any idea's or experience? Oh, by the way..I don't have headers..Just a cat back set up.

Ab, if you take the cats off I don't think it will matter if you have the rear muffs on or off. Try it both ways. I think with the muffs on you will get a more throaty sound and still be very loud. I have the Belanger setup and it sounded good with the hi flow cats but when I tried it with no cats the sound became three times louder! I even went back and put the cats on again just to be sure there was such a difference and had my wife listen to both as well and she doesn't even like it with cats any more! Try it and if you don't like it you can always put them back on. I've heard a lot of people complained about a bad smell if you remove the cats but so far mine smells normal to me. If you like, give me a call and you can hear it for yourself. Have fun! George.

If you remove the std cats the sound with straight pipes will be painfully loud as the std cats do a major part of the silencing

"Painfully Loud..."

(?)

Naw, I heard a 550 HP w/just pipes and... finally... a Viper that sounded the way it looked!

I was amazed at the lack of resonances...

...rode in it too....

Painfully Loud:

Definition: Pain felt from wife when exhaust is loud enough to wake toddler and newborn when you leave garage.

Doubly painful if you wake them on your return.

Painfully loud ... Definition
"Now Sir, are you aware that your vehicle contravenes the road traffic act of 1907 reference excess noise in a built up area and as such you are committing a prosecutable offence which may be punishable by a draconian fine, points on your licence or the removal of an important part of your anatomy" ... Actually, I think here in the US, a "painfully loud" Viper might actually be tolerated by law enforcement.

Why? The Viper is so rare and SO RADICAL, that certain allowances are usually made.

Yeah, like who can believe you can get a BLACK FLAG at LAGUNA SECA if your CAR IS TOO LOUD!!

I have a friend running Belangers/no cats/ and only one pair of mufflers in the rear on a '97 GTS. I have the same set up, but with 4 mufflers. His is a little louder than mine. In fact, while at his house last summer, His car was our 6 AM wake up call. Our bedroom was over the garage. Walls resonate and you have to speak up to communicate. It was great.

Painfully Loud Viper=ME

I have borla kit without the cats, and yes the car is loud, but trust me everyone tollerates it. The car finally sounds the way it needs to.

Cops give me thumbs up and never ever say anything about the noise.

I had Ted May insert some custom made "low-back" mufflers(basically just a corkscrew) into my snake-oyls(w/ high flow cats) for a good sound/backpressure compromise. Straight pipes buzzed like a hive of bees under the seat but that is gone and the sound is aggressive, though not quite as obnoxious.

The inserts also drop out easily by disconnecting the rear section.

I was told Albert was running straight pipes last I heard his car at River City raceway and the car sounded proper! Of course with all the TNT work on his motor it would sound beefy blowing through the stock setup but take out the corks and these cars sound great. Not a huge difference till you put your foot in it then it's a symphony. Too loud? No way...

if i take my gts to the local muffler shop, i wonder if they will know how to remove the side sills?

Most likely not. If they are going to remove them for you, be prepared to give them a lot of direction.
