Gotta order new tires.

Went to tirerack.com and saw that Mich Pilot Sports are about 290 a pc.

Then looked at Dunlop and saw they only want 157 a pc for theirs. will I really notice a big difference with these? I would save nearly 300 bucks for the both! I also have New Mich Pilot Sports on the back....

AB, does Ger know you're using his account?
quote:
Originally posted by Gerald:285's? I thought vipers came stock with 275's?Gerald

While it's true that 275 is oem, it's also well known that 285 work fine and help with the push a little bit. It was the best of times when the mxx3 was available AND the 285 was priced way less than the mxx3 275.

The benefit also of the 285 is that you can set that tire on the pavement without scratching the rim as they are just a little wider.

Oh Gerald. Let me quote someone.

"The tires are the most important part of the vehicle. Without question. Why? Because every movement you make, every thought you have, and every intention that you have, has to be translated through the tires. The rest of the vehicle is along for the ride. As a matter of fact, you could take the position that everything in the vehicle is there in order to make the tires work. Driver included."

Can anyone guess who said this, and what TV special it is from? A clue - it was on the discovery channel a few years ago. I must have watched it 1000 times, really. It puts me to sleep at night hearing the sounds of racing.

Don't know why everyone is demeaning Dunlop? Sport 9000 and Sport 8000 are great tires. From one who replaced the Michelins on my car with improved performance. I replaced with Goodyear.
But,Dunlop won the Car & Driver performance test a few years back. Granted the OE tire is designed for the car, but it has many compromises. And if you have a higher priority for Say dry traction vs wet. Other combinations work better. My track times proved it.

I agree with Pauls. I've used the Dunlap sport 8000 on my
93 RX-7 for years. I had tried many others, but the Dunlap
held up better and had a really mean look to it. What bothers
me is the price of the Pilot sports - You don't have much choice
for the rear, but the fronts are almost the same price. It's like Michelin is snagging you with over priced fronts, because
they think every one will get them in sets. And when you buy
anything, you're giving your vote that the price is OK. Maybe
Michelin will listen and bring the price of the fronts down to
compete with other tires just as good for the application.

Dunlop SP 8000s come in Viper Sizes. could even upgrade to a 285 on the front. Anyone who wants an edge has to experiment. My ancient (as Jon B says) Goodyear Eagle GSAs out perform the stock Michelins dramatically. You'll find Michelin is not the almighty by any means. lots of money so so performance.

Gerald you are right to an extent. Five major groups have bought
all the name brands. B/F=Bridgestone/Firestone MUG=Michelin, Uniroyal and BFG. Conti owns General,Pirelli owns Armstrong. Goodyear is also Dunlop and Kelly. Cooper and Avon had a deal for awhile. The mother company tries to position each of the family brands to compete against a competitor. There is crossover in many areas. Michelin/BFG, Goodyear/Dunlop both market to the same HiPerf customer in many cases. But each brand still considers its siblings competition. In many cases BFGs are better performance tires than Michelin and Dunlop out perform Eagles.

Check Sears they are having a tire sale and it applies to Mich Pilots even if they have to order them for you.

My local Sears is charging $345 for the 335-30-18s
I don't know the front tire price. For some reason I need new rears but not fronts hmmmmm.

I have HEARD, but not saying it's true , that there are only a few tire mfg companies. the "other names" are just diff brands with different "names" or stamps on them.. True?
Thanks for the info on the tires..

Oh, Gerald, a tough day at the office forces me to gently sting you with this reply. Just for kicks, I occasionally scoot thru the Corvette web site only looking at 2 sections...."Kill Stories", cause it's always a laugh to read some of the bull that's touted and "Babes", cause I'm normal! OK, I saw your post of your absolutely gorgeous girl friend in the "Babes" and have been envious of you since! Hell, I have a Viper, it's beautiful, attracts all kinds of attention but not like your friend most certainly does. Now, fast forward, your asking about conserving on tires?? Yee gads, pass your friend to me and I'll spring for the difference in the Mich's and Dunlops! Oh yeah, I haven't a clue which tire is better, but your lady is indeed a prize. Good luck with your decisions....both of them!

Just remember if you get Pilot Sports, GET THE "C1" VERSION IF IT IS AVAILABLE. (It is for 18's, I don't know about 17's.)

As in previous post, the C1 is a "carcass variation" that "corrects" the high speed "failures" experienced by ordinary Pilot Sports.

The C1 is also the "special" Pilot Sport used by Viper and Ferrari.
