Dust off those creative writing skills: what does detonation sound like on a Gen II?

I have heard a lot of cars "rattle," but never a Viper. Given the odd sound of the Viper V10's exhaust note, I was wondering what I should be listening to in order to make sure the timing is not so advanced the car is detonating. Does it sound the same as other cars? Or different?

Car was on dyno today and absolutely not pinging right now, but I'm thinking of adding timing and was wondering how to tune my seat-of-the-pants detonation sensor. I can always look at spark plugs, but I'm looking for any audio pointers as that is a much slower and inaccurate process.

It sounds the same and if action is not taken it is overlaid by the sound of money leaving your wallet. LOL.

You need to "load tune" your car. not ramdom settings.

They take a guess at the tune, then I run it on a Dyno Dynamics machine here in Scottsdale which loads the car to reproduce driving so if the timing was so aggressive as to detonate it would show up on the dyno runs.

it sounds pretty much like any other car detonating, just harder to hear over the exhaust - believe me, I know
imagine a bunch of metal pellets rattling around in your engine - that is what it sounds like

do you have a cast pistons or forged?

I would not take the chance of tuning by detonation if you are on cast pistons

guessing at a tune is the absolute most ******** thing to do. dont do it. there is never a good enough reason to risk a $15k engine for maybe 10 rwhp......

but detonation sounds like marbles in a coffee can being shaken

it also sometimes sounds like a high powerd bead blaster,because thats what its doin to ur pistions and rings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ido you have a cast pistons or forged?

I have a 1998 so forged pistons. For Plum, DC knows what kind of timing would eat a Viper motor so having them take a shot at it is no more dangerous than them taking a shot at it at their own shop on their own dyno.

The other noticeable thing is that the speed or timing of the rattle doesn't seem to correspond to the engine speed very well. To me, that alone makes the knocking sound easy to pick out.
