Has anyone ever been hassled for taking their catalytic converters off? We talk openly about it on this board. I am running high flow cats and yes I am in violation - Tampering.

You guys can look up all the fine print but replacing working catalytic converters on a car with less than 50k miles is a no no under EPA guidelines. Then the big one, removal of the cats is a $25k fine for the shop + fine for the vehicle owner.

I think about taking my cats off from time to time but want to first know……is there any enforcement or stories that people have heard?

Since you can't see the cats no will know that they are missing unless they do a sniff test as part of an inspection. My state does not do sniff tests. If they did I would have worked out a system of slipping them in and then out as needed. For those of you worrying about changing to high flows and tampering.Save the old cats.Hit them with a large hammer.Opps you hit a rock.Drive a rod through them.Defective interior had to be replaced.Fry them with a torch etc.etc.You just had to replace them due to a failure.
