Great to see such a strong forum for the Viper generation(s)!

My wife and I flew down to L.A. from Vancouver BC and bought a 2000 RT/10 and then drove it home along the California Coast and in to Oregan Redwood forest then up the I5 for 1400 miles in four days. What a blast! (Pictures to follow)

What a car! My last car was a C6 Z06 and this beast is nothing like that. Now that I have the Hard top off and have been blasting around town with it I can't seem to get this silly grin off my face. :)

Looking forward to the learning curve, (I didn't get a Manual) and glad you will be here to help! I am the kind of guy that likes to do most of the maintenance stuff my self. First thing will be an oil change ... 10/30 Mobile One Synthetic?

Is there a how to page for Oil Changes?

Thanks guys!

Welcome! That grin will appear every time you walk into the garage and while in the driver's seat. Use the search function to find threads on both acquiring manuals and oil change information (type of oil and how-to)...there will be a number of threads about oil...it sometimes gets very interesting. I purchased my manual from Bishko Books, but they may also be available through the VCA site vendors.

Congratulations on your purchase.

One more thing...join the VCA...Benefits of joining the VCA.

CONGRATS, and welcome to the site!!

I am a bit envious of your trip home! :)

Here is the Dodge site for Manuals...

https://techauthority.gltghosting.c...rHome?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10051

suggest that you get an Owners Manual and a Service Manual. While there are a few mistakes here and there, the manuals are a necessity!!!

After you join the VCA, you can let this site know...and THEN access the "how to" sections.

In the meantime, if you need to know something, just ask... or call one of us who are easily tracked.

Oil is either very easy to choose...or very difficult...and it certainly depends on your driver habits, planned usage, desire to experiment, and your climate. I use Mobil 1 10W-30 in our Gen I's, II's, and early (2003) Gen III. I use Mobil 1 0W-40 in our Gen IV...noting that I am basically sticking with the "factory fill"...though the Gen I's came with mineral oil in a 10W-30 weight. I would also note that our cars seldom see a startup temperature less than 50 degrees F and they are not "tracked"...merely driven in a spirited fashion as time, location, and safety permit. :)

All of that said, we have had no issues with the above oil choices, and a huge book of used oil analyses that I keep supports that statement.

Have fun, and don't forget to post your pics.

First problem is getting it up... (if you don't have a lift) without damaging the side sills. The lift points are front and rear along the insides of the sills... The rest is a piece of cake.. Also, do it on a level surface and raise the whole car. The drain plug is not at the rear of the oil pan, it drains from the middle of one side.

Enjoy

Keep in mind that there are now Viper model year specific Mopar oil filters recommended for ALL Vipers:

1992 thru 2006 part number 05037836AA

2008 AND 0909 part number 05038041AA

Wow, You guys are great! Joining the club sounds like a great idea!

I am hearing brake pad indicator (squealer) and wondered how straight forward is a brake job?

Jacking the vette required "Hockey Pucks" or a system of ramp/boards. Is there a slot for the pucks?

These are the easiest brake pads you've ever changed. You don't even have to remove the calipers!

You do if you want to have the rotors turned so the new pads will not squeal, at least on the fronts. I was told by a brake guy the other day that not resurfacing the rotors is a common step skipped by the do-it-yourselfers and noise usually follows.

Not sure I'd agree with the squeel comment but I would recomend checking for run-out and resurfacing the rotors at every pad change...

Still, it's a piece-of-cake to do brake work on a viper!

Well the RT went through Inspection today, (I must admit that I was anxious in case they found something serious) and other than a wheel lug nut and a Back-up light switch unit it checked out perfect! (28,500 miles on this car).

The Daytime Running Light conversion was a snap as a friend of mine ran a 3 inch wire between two fuses to get the fog lights coming on with ignition.

I took off the hard top and what a sweet car! Black on black and a coat of wax has her just gleaming. Crowds of people around this car every where she goes!

Maybe I'll get to pics tomorrow.

BTW does the woofer speaker behind the seats have a cover or does the speaker paper show stock?

Twice now I have smelled clutch on a spirited acceleration off the line. Do these clutches need a quicker engagement than the Z06?

Are parts easily available for a 2000 RT? They found one reverse light switch in the whole country, (in Ontario).

Still can't seem to get this silly grin off my face!! :)

Re: First Post ... Pictures

Here are the first pictures of "Diesel" (The name we gave our new car when I asked my wife what she thought and she read the first sign we passed. Everyone knows deisel makes serious torque!).

My son ... "Give me the keys Dad!"

Explaining Viper things to you
Welcome to the insanity. Great looking car!

With all that discussion of oil changes etc, don't forget about your tranny, diff, power steering, brake and clutch fluids. May need plug wires and plugs too. Check your air filters. Do the power steering cap fix. All that is a great way to get to know your car.

In regards to the clutch smell, yours may be toast and it is slipping. Take the car out on the freeway at 70 mph in 5th gear and from a cruise stance, nail it. If the rpm's go up without an appreciable increase in speed, your clutch is gone. They are easy to change. Put a new slave in while you're in there too.

First thing will be an oil change ... 10/30 Mobile One Synthetic?

Is there a how to page for Oil Changes?

Thanks guys!

10/30 Mobil One was factory fill, so that'll work or some guys have gone to 0w40. 10w30 can be found at Wal-Mart in 5 qt jugs for $22 each. 0w40 will have to be bought in individual quarts from auto parts places.

There is actually a how-to on oil changes around here somewhere, but I couldn't find it for you. Its nothing special about a Viper oil change, just like any other car. One thing to remember is, the oil drains from the side of the pan, so jack the car up in the front and rear to be sure all the old oil drains out (or jack up front, let it drain and then lower car to ground and let rest drain out).

Nice Hat............

!!!

Dangit! Beat me by 5 minutes. Anyway, throw the hat away or give the Viper back. You have 24 hours to make your decision :D

Welcome to the party dude! Have fun and keep it shiny side up!

Did you notice there are no tags/badges whatsoever on the car? I suppose the various Dodge and Viper tags have been removed?

Also, I am suprised the Sun Visors are cloth and they have faded. Do you dye them? Did they come in black leather? Aren't there decals to cover the ugly air bag stickers?

The exhaust tips are galvanized steel instead of chrome, are there inserts?

I haven't found any of this stuff.

The emblems are easy to get from any of the vendors here. Chrome really stands out and they are easy to do.

You will never, ever need the sun visers ! Off they go for a nice clean look .

You haven't mentioned if there were any mods done to the car so we will guess that you still have the original exhaust.
Put some RT high flows with a muffler delete and make the beast growl like it should.
