Are there any precautions or upgrades that a Gen I owner can do to increase the life span of there engines as well as make them as reliable as the Gen II? I would rather pay a little now, than a fortune down the road! Any insight would be very appreciated.

Coolants have two components: the glycol for the freeze protection and anticorrosion additives. The glycol never "wears" out, mixtures will always freeze at lower than 32F, but the additives will deplete. Hence, green coolant should be changed every 2 years, the pink coolant (Dex-Cool) every 5 years.
