O.K. I'm sorry if this has been discussed before and I'm also sorry to bring up the Viper vs Vette thing, but I just needed some answers. My goal is to make my 96 GTS greater than the c6 zo6 on the street and track. I don't have a road course close but do have a 1/8 mile drag strip that I frequently race at. I haven't raced the Viper yet I'm still learning the car, but I definatly am. So my question is what would it take to be able to beat up on the vette. So far I have 3.55's, short shifter, kw coilovers, belanger headers, rt high flow cats, corsa catback, s and b filters, smooth tubes, and nitto invo street tires (345's). I think that's it. Any advice would be great (good or bad).
Also I'm trying to do this with the least amount of mods and money spent but with reliable power.
Thanks in advance
Nathan

go with any mod that adds traction to your car first. If you can stick and launch hard, thats half the battle.

Power is easy to get up there, just takes $$$

My 98 is set-up alot like yours but with 1.7 rocker arms and 70mm throttle bodies and Kumho V700 tires and I had a great run with a presumably stock C6 Zo6 and it was a dead heat. About as close as you could get from a roll with any edge going to me. With the sticky tires I have no doubt I could have wooped him from a launch.

YOU NEED A TUNE!!!

All it takes to pop a C6Zit 50-150mph is a exhaust system and a tune.

The stock tune on theses cars *****.

Good topic, I have aslo been wondering about this....

I have a 97 gts and my dad has a C6 Zo6.
My GTS has an exhaust, smooth tubes, cat delete and 1.7 rollers. I dynoed 453 whp and 530 lb torque (flywheel) my dadas Zo6 is stock and dynoed at 443 whp and 458 lb torque (flywheel). This was done on the same dyno.

We have not had a chance to race yet but by the sound of things you all think the ZO6 would beat my GTS?

Yes, he should beat you, his car is 200 lbs lighter and has better gearing in the 3:42. The 10 extra hp will not help you much.

Black mamba1,

I just added the torque figures, do you think the extra 70 lb torque would make it any closer?

Its a drivers race, if drivers are equal the zo6 will beat you by .3-.4 in the qtr mile with a stock gen 2. With the mods you have its very possible to beat the zo6. There have been several people that have done mid 11's with far fewer mods than yours.

I'm going to put my disclaimer up before I start getting accused of trolling this thread. I own a 97 GTS and I absolutely love it. I also own a C4 ZR1 and love that car too. That said, I follow both Dodge and Chevy on both their flagship sports cars, and promise you my opinion is unbiased.

I agree mostly with the first and second responses, and add that the C6 ZO6 is a serious car with serious power. It packs 505HP and 500TQ, has traction control and torque management, and is very strong all the way up to 175. I know first hand, friend has one.

For you to hold up to that car, you definately need traction. I'd consider going back to stock gears, or perhaps 3.45s, because you'll need about 100-extra HP to ensure you pull the ZO6, and may have trouble hooking up with the gears you have on there now.

Just my $.02.

I would expect to beat a vette with only exhaust and PS2s. If you lose, practise driving or convince the vette guy to turn on his TC.

But if you want to beat the ZR1, instal a Roe supercharger kit. That way you could always add water/methanol injection and an 8# pulley to get another 100+ rwhp. if you wanted it.

Advantage of a Roe is that the torque curve is flat from 2,000rpm, not to mention big hp gains from idle throughout the rpm range.

TC slows the vette down when it's on. "Torque Managment"?

200# isn't very much weight - whether it's a benefit or a loss depends on where the weight is located as it could help with traction.

Every race between a Viper and vette I've ever seen has the Viper winning. 5th gear vids all show the 3rd Gen beating the vette Z06. The Gen 3 and Gen 2 are comparable because the runcraps come on the Gen3.

Just bolt on a set of Drag Radials and kick some ass.

I think the Z06 is only a tiny bit faster than a Gen 2 and driver skills rule. PS2s, DRs, exhaust - it doesn't take much to beat a Z06. They only win price and comfort cmparisons. Even the magazines that say the vette is better admit that the vette loses in all performance catagories.

I agree it's a drivers race, both being equal you'll lose. I think your gearing is fine with sticky tires. I raced a new Z-06 at the track twice on the same day, his real world mph was 118. That was on a warm day with a 10 - 15 mph cross wind. Both times I got him out of the hole and I've got the same gearing you have. Remember roll on's on the street have no bearing on what happens at the track.

Thank you everyone for all the input. So I think I have it down now. With my mods I have now and equal drivers and traction willing I should pull it out in a close race. What do you think I should try next for mods. Thanks again people you all are great help.
On the gears I felt that with the 20'' rims and tires being 1'' taller than stock that the gears wouldnt be overkill and would just help offset the rims and act more like 3.33s or 3.45s. Might be off on my thinking but even with the speed calibrator my speedo is off by 5 mph. Also with the nitto invo I can do a 30 mph roll start and get no spin and only get minor minor spin on the first to second shift.

On a road course with a pre-ABS Gen 2 you may also want to consider brakes.

I have a 98 and catch and pass them most all the time when I can get close to them before a straight....I 'm seldom able to brake as late as they do so it seems tough to get 'em at the end of a straight without major brakes - and confidence in 'em. Perhaps with a FE with ABS one'd have the confidence to go deep.....

I have no trouble pulling stockers on a straight, but I'm 555/585 RW but thast's to be expected with 100 HP and TQ advantage.
