Friend of mine wants to purchase some aftermarket pushrods because one of his is bent a little. His motor is an all stock 97 GTS. no roller rockers.

Your friend should consider using Stock Pushrods again if he's keeping it all stock. If he hits a valve, floats a valve, or still using old or worn out springs and using hardened pushrods the damage will be catastrophic! Stock pushrods will have some give if a bad opportunity presents itself.

Good Luck!

The big question is what color stripes are on that pushrod. The color of the stripes on the pushrod is what determines what length they are. If there are two black stripes on it, I have some that I can share, too. I second Doug's recommendation to keep the stock pushrods - they're a weak link and if something is going to break, I'd rather have it be one of them than something else...

For some reason, there are a number of '97 cars that have bent pushrods. In every case that I've seen (not a whole lot, personally), the pushrod just gave up the ghost at around 5500 RPM and started clacking. Damage has always been limited to the pushrod... That's a good thing, because the pushrods can be swapped in about fifteen minutes.

My '97 GTS bent a couple of pushrods for no apparent reason - I was just accelerating in a normal manner, and I got that horrific sounding clacking sound. I was only a mile or so from home, so I tore it down, and two pushrods gave up the ghost - one really bent bad, and one was just slightly bent. I have a feeling a lot of cars have 'slightly' bent pushrods and they'll eventually go out when they get stressed enough. Even if there is a slight bend in the pushrod, it will get worse eventually...

I didn't know about it, either. I found out about the black stripes when I pulled a bunch of mine to check them, and noticed that they were color coded. I did a bunch of research, and found that they used different length pushrods on different cars, and there is a color-coding scheme that says what their length is.

Definitely freaked me out in a big way when mine went... I thought the worst about it, but when I dug into it, it was just a really badly bent pushrod. I checked them all, and found another that was just slightly bent - but probably would have catastrophically bent out eventually. The key is to fix them before they find they do big damage... Definitely don't want to wait until it tries to get into the cylinder...

I believe that the aftermarket push rods are a chrome moly alloy and they are substantially heavier

Thank you all for your help.

We measured the pushrod using comp cams pushrod length checker. On our particular 97 GTS. It came out to 7.600.
Hopefully this help someone out in the future.
