At other places on their site, they talk about a near instantious gear change which speculation says requires electronic control of the engine.

Are you saying that is the trans? The one in the pic. looks like a transaxle with the alternator attached as well as the starter motor. Pretty trick looking stuff for sure.

The announcement says that the Viper R trans will be moved to the rear and sourced to Xtrac. That is the only Xtrac trans shown that would do the trick for the Viper. If you read the Xtrac material you'll find that it is the trans used on a lot of GT cars including the racing version of the Corvette. You'll also read some interesting awards data about the shifting mechanism.
