That will likely depend on the track, or more accurately, the group sponsoring the event.
I go to the track (road course, not drag race, but I imagine its similar) with a couple of different groups, and the group, not the track, usually specifies the safety equipment.
Yeah, I went cheap and bought a JC Whitney special without the Snell sticker but the tech inspector let me slide. If I have to get another helmet I want to make sure it's going to get me through tech for some time to come. I've heard there's a new Snell SA rating out there. Is this true and will the NHRA tracks be adopting that standard?
It's amazing to me that they ******* about my closed face helmet but allowed a ton of guys with faster trailered cars to run with open face helmets.
The Snell Foundation ratings come out every 5 years and seem to show up late in the year. Most sanctioning bodies allow current SA rating and one prior and require the helmet to be no more than 5 years old. So, buying an SA2000 helmet now will give you the same life as buying an SA2005 - 5 years. That seems to make it fair for al - no matter what / when purchased.
