In the next issue of Mopar Action magazine (Feb 2002) there is an article about at Viper with a 588ci hemi engine. Thought you might want to check it out. States that it makes 950HP weighs 2,800 lbs and has run low 9's but he thinks it can do a mid 8 sec 1/4 mile. I think its a track car only but not sure. Looks to be N/A they don't give too many details about the engine other than 14.8-to-1 compression. It uses a 727 tranny (what ever that is)

Also in the same magazine there was a Charger with a Viper crate V-10. It was a stock V-10 with just headers, made 441 rwhp.

The 727 is a bullit proof 3 speed of yesterday(60's and 70's cars and trucks.).Another(overdrive) box was added to it to turn it into the not so bullit proof 4 sp od used in the ram truck. The 4 spd od version suffers from poor circulation and has a high failure rate behind the 5.9 cummins. Its the od unit that fails.God its good to be past middle age and know all this retro stuff! The cops don't give you tickets and the insurance Co's give you a discount(If they only had a clue).Women of all ages are intrested and my wife would still kill me if I am stupid enough to get into trouble. Amen to the 727 Tranny. It is still a mainstay of drag racing for Mopars, it was and is about the strongest automatic transmission that was ever built. If it is set up properly, it can withstand gobs of horsepower, and just laugh at it. It was used behind the Hemi engines of the late 60's and early 70's, the 440's and the 383's and some small blocks, like the 340 Six Paks to name a few. Wasn't the lightest tranny, but is it ever strong.

If that's the car I think it is, I looked at it in the race pits at the Mopar Nationals. I asked the owner what it ran and he said "It ran a 9.40 with the driver shifting from 1st to 3rd". He was giving the driver (who was standing there) a little bit of sarcasm.

He was sure with some dialing in of the car it would be in the 8's.

It was an Awesome looking car.

Good to hear the comments about the 727 tranny.
I'm putting one in my '68 Barracuda behind a new 440 I built that came out of a '67 Charger R/T. Going with a Turbo Action manual valve body and 2200 RPM stall converter.

Bill Adams Hemi Viper is really slick. It was at the Viper Nationals at Norwalk this year. Ran a 9.186 against me in the Semis. Unfortunately, he dialed a 9.19. That was my gift for the day and we went on to win. If the market comes back i'm going to do the same thing with a wrecked Viper, only keep the V10 and go with a blower.
