Curious to those with more experience with the Viper. I was playing around with a buddy and his 2001 vette, lined up on a freeway type road, the tires were cold. We both nailed it and with all the exhaust noise, tire noise, cold tires and excitement I didn't shift to 2nd until it wound up and bounced down off the rev limiter. Fuel cut off or whatever, .any real harm done? It didn't really seem anyworse than what I've done on a regular basis in rental cars.

Funny thing, he could do whatever and the traction control, yaw control does it all. While I was smokin em I was fish tailing right and left, but when I caught 2nd it was like he was standing still. I need to practice thats for sure!

Others thoughts? Appreciate it

No harm done.

I would guess it is not great to make it a habit, but an occasional limiter bump is not a problem.

I did my share of hitting the limit a few times. Scared the *** out of me the first time. No hard to be detected yet.

You'll do more harm if you hit the rev limiter without a load on the engine (neutral gear).

If you going to hit it, make sure your tappets and timing settings are OK, or you could be seeing damaged valves for starters.

The ECU reads the RPM off the crank position. The limiter will not cut fuel I doubt, it will work through the ECU managing the electrics.

I agree with most of the above. I've hit the rev limiter several times and feel it is absolutely safe to do so under load. Free reving to >6 large - that's a whole different deal!

Hi Nadine ! Actually the rev limiter supposedly does cut the fuel.(shuts the injectors) For all those of you who think the rev limiter will protect you when you miss a shift, guess again!! It does not work in neutral!! Scary stuff, no????

What about if you hit the wrong gear like 2nd instead of 4th?

Getting 4th rather than 2nd is bad.

An engine's management systems can protect you from overrevving under power by turning off fuel/spark when RPMs reach a certain threshold. The systems can't protect you from mechanical overrev, such as downshifting to 2nd at 110, or from non-managed systems like NOS with a secondary fuel input.
