How do you make shifter longer?

My stock shifter had the piece taken out which drops the shifter down a couple of inches. I have just received the MGW shifter for my birthday and when I put it on, it's about as tall as the dash. You can still shift if you don't mind smashing your fingers. I need something to lengthen the piece that you screw the MGW shifter onto about 2-3 inches. Any clues?

Sounds like the vibration isolator/dampner was removed. Replacing it should lengthen the shifter by ~ 2.5".

I think you're right, Joe. It was something that suppossedly goes bad around every 7 years. But if I put that back in, would I have to pull of the console as oppossed to just rolling the leather boot down?

Try this--http://www.richdetert.com/RichsShifterParts.htm

He makes replacement isolaters without the rubber insert. Firms up the shift nicely. You can them in a few sizes, but also in the stock length.
