How hot is too hot?

I used to run a very constant 185-190 degrees max and recently I've been steady at 200 degrees (the third of the three central lines). Since it doesn't get any hotter than that I'm not really concerned but wonder if this is what happens when there's air in the system that needs to be burped.

I figured if there was air in the system, temperature would go up but wouldn't be constant...this constant-200-condition seems like the thermostat wants the car at 200. Anyone ever experience this?

No worries. But burping it occasionally is good maintenance.

If it ever gets too hot then keep the speed high and the rpm low - under 2K.

It's been hotter than a freshly fried fox in a forest fire out here lately, and I've seen my car's gauge climb over the third mark by a maybe one or two needle-widths. So I guess I'm curious about "What is too hot" on the gauge?

The red line (250) is too hot. It is normal in hot weather under heavy load to get close to the red line. The service manual explains this.

The red line (250) is too hot. It is normal in hot weather under heavy load to get close to the red line. The service manual explains this.

Thats the same thing I was told by the Ga. Viper tech instructor at a VCA event. The hottest I've ever seen my car is the line right before the 250 mark. It was on a reasonably cool night in FL and I hadnt been ragging the car out. I'm guessing an air bubble got in the system causing the spike. It later cooled down (~30 mins or less) to the normal 190-200 temp and never got that hot again.

During the Viper Days at VIR on Friday morning, I check the gauges on the 4000' back straight - temp. is full peg, past the 250 mark. Put it in 6th, temp. comes back down to 190, go to pits. Fluid is fine. Go back on track, as the RPM's climb past 5000, temp. goes up. It's the dreaded 2001 plastic water pump impellar! Change water pumps, burp the coolant. Back on track, at full song, never climbs above 190.
But, it never pinged at 250, ran strong enough I didn't even notice. No telling how many laps it was like that! Car is fine now.

The line before 250 is 225. The line after 190 is 200. I was comparing the gauge to Autotap software we had running on the dyno today.
