Going to Viper days and we want to do some studying before hand. Does anyone have a link to an on-line document about the basics of high speed driving?

Thanks

Bill , I'm not familiar with any online Links..But I'd like to reccomend two excellent books !

1) Speed Secrets - Professional Race driving techniques By Ross Bentley

2) Going Faster - Mastering the Art of Race Driving By Skip Barber

I've read both and found the information to be invaluable.

Good Luck !

The instructors will point you in the right direction. After that it's practice, practice, practice.

Get a good handle on heel 'n toe.

Blu is right on, Speed Secrets is a must for any racing library.

I commend you for looking into some good reading prior to Viper Days, as the Instruction is great, but it is very much a mental exercise, and homework can't hurt.

What's the secret to heal-n-toe setup in a GTS. I'm 6'2" and have tried to get a comfortable setup for heel-n-toe, but the steering wheel always gets into the way of my knee when I try to reach both the brake and blip the gas. Am I too tall, do I need the seat lowering kit, other thoughts?

I'm assuming the peddles are adjusted all the way back. If the wheel is tilted all the way down you may still have problems. Tilt it up one notch. If it's still in the way you'll have to put more "roll" into you ankle...or have it amputated.

When I saw your post I planned to respond by recommending Speed Secrets, but I'm happy to see that others already have! I've read quite a few books, but that one in particular included all the necessary information in a very clear and straight forward manner. It was easy to read and taught me a great deal - I would highly recommend it.

Enjoy Viperdays - the best place for lots of seat time and excellent instruction!

P.S. You'll find that everyone at Viperdays is very friendly. Look me up if I can be of any help.

That's a cool picture of your car with the flames coming out. I've done race pictures for 20 years and it's a real challenge to get the flames to come out at the time you take the picture.

I've returned to this book time and time again. High suggested reading.

Very difficult to condense road racing into a bible of any sorts but this comes the closest I've come across yet.

The part in going faster about how to find the line was the biggest revalation I have had in many a year of track driving. It is a must read.

"Going Faster" and "Speed Secrets" are great books and break down the racing lines and car dynamics very well, but there is no replacement for seat time. Start slow listen to your instructor, get a ride with a good Viper driver to actually see what it's all about and gradually work up to speed with more seat time. I truly believe this is the best method to learning in the quickest possible time.

Hey BigCarrot (William),I haven't found a book yet that helps control road rage ..But a big Blunt on the way home from the office usually does the trick :D

I've ready BOTH Speed Secrets and Going Faster. Each one is great on its own. For me, I found that reading them AGAIN after you have some on track instruction and seat time will really make the points sink in. Reading it kind of connects the dots on everything that has been taught to you on the track. Viper Days is the best place to get lots of seat time in a safe environment where you can go as fast as you can handle.

Ditto.

It wasn't until after a few track days that a lot of what I'd been reading for years started to really sink in and apply to me directly. It's easy to absorb everything you can get your hands on but until you actually being to apply it, it's just stored data.

Matter of fact, I read through certain chapters of 'Going Faster' the very evening of that first track day.
