I noticed a fluid leak on my floor by right rear wheel. I also noticed in my wheel well. I pulled wheel and everything in that area a mess. Service manual says hub/bearing is maintenance free for life. It also says damaged bearing seals and the results of -excessive-grease-loss requires replacement of hub bearing. My question is where does all this grease or fluid come from? It is not brake fluid. Is it grease gettig hot then dripping on my floor when I park?
Where and who can I get the best price on new Hub/Bearing assembly.
Thanks

The rear hub/bearing assembly is a sealed unit. Last time I bought one, it was a little over $200. If it were bad, or leaking, there would be play in the hub. With the wheel bolted on, you could try and move the wheel back and forth and up and down. If the bearing were bad, you'd feel some play. The grease inside the bearing is a thick white wheel bearing grease. I cant imagine any circumstances where it would get thin enough to drip down onto the floor. I dont think your problem is a wheel bearing problem. I think most likely, you have a leaking axle seal. Does the fluid on the floor stink like gear oil?

It does seem to be more like a fluid, like rear end grease or fluid. The fluid or grease when on floor seem to be color and thickness of rear end fluid. I did not think fluid traveled internally with half-shafts. This leak is has fluid all over a-arms, ball joints, and everything in that area. There is no fluid on rotor or pads. There is no fluid leak at or by rear end. Where is this axle seal located?
Thanks for responding.

Mike, I don't know what your situation is, but what I have seen, is ball joints oozing grease. When your brakes heat up the rotors, calipers, hub, etc, the heat travels into the ball joints and thins the grease, which then oozes out, and drips down, or gets whipped up by the incident wind. If I were you, I would clean everything off, and then take it for a drive, to see if you can isolate the leak and determine just what exactly is leaking.

Vic I think you hit it right on. I also talked to John Archer and he said the same thing. I cleaned it real good and I think thats exactly what the problem was.

Thanks for the input

Geez Mike, what the hell are you doing to heat the ball joints that much? Sneaking in some practice track time so you can wax me at Sebring?
