I don\'t understand all this porus stuff about Vipers...please explain

I hear that the metal on the oil pans and other parts of the Viper are porus and they leak?

How is that? I have this mysterious oil leak that my dealer can't seem to fine maybe I have holes???

You are correct! My 98 GTS leaks through the oil pan in one spot.
Got tired of the Dealer so for now just living with it.

I had oil leaks on my oil pan. DLM removed it and found the leak. So far no leaky. My car's a 2002.

Cheers,
Tom

I has to do with the fact that the metal molecules that the pan is made up from actually have enough space between them for the oil to "seep" through. think of the oil pan as a very hard and thin sponge. this problem could be the result of excess air entering the forming process.

Wouldn't this be something realitivly cheap to just fix and never worry about again? Is there some benifit to keeping a pourious pan?

GM has a procedure whereby mechanics fix porous materials on tranny housings, and tranny and oil pans. There are some chemicals you just coat the offending part with and the problem is gone. It's essentially a purpose-formulated epoxy.

Why couldn't something similar be used on the Viper? It's not made of unobtanium or anything!

We "impregnate" porous metals to prevent freon gas and oil from escaping from between the grain boundries. Very common on A/C parts like your compressor, or other cast surfaces.

Needing to impregnate the oil pan is probably due to a poor design or material selection.
