Last night I washed the car, and when I opened the door a stream of water started flowing out of the bottom of the door. Obviously there is some area I need to avoid with the hose.

Does anyone know how water gets in?

thanks,
~Jay

It's hard to rinse the car with the hose off, but that would indeed solve the problem! But then, I'll need to ask, "how do I get the soap off the car after washing it?"

Yes, the top and the windows were up and I avoided as much as possible spraying where the window meets the top.

I have a GTS and the doors drain water for hours afterward. Never a gusher, just a drip drip. I think the window seals are marginal at best.

My car has never been wet, so I can't comment on Vipers with leaking problems. Dave failed the "daily driver" requirements that were established a while back, so I don't know why he is offering any advice either.

I've designed doors for production vehicles, and generally all doors can get water in them. That's why there is a plastic sheet barrier on the door inner. Internally in a door, there's 2 zones, wet and dry. All doors will have drain holes. Drain holes are punched holes for metal doors, and these aren't missed during the manufacturing because they are part of tooling. Yet doors like the Viper, SMC and plastic doors, the holes are made manually to trim lines, and another problem is that the plastic or SMC outer is bonded on and the excess adhesive can clog the drain holes.

So take a look under the door inside the lip and look for holes, see if they are clogged or are missing. You can always drill them in if you're up to doing it yourself or have the dealer or body shop do it for you. 1/4" diameter should be fine, 3 or 4 of them spaced out from front to back to be sure the water will drain out of the door to accommodate whatever incline / decline the car is parked on.

If somebody can take some pics of the underside of their door and Post them, even better to evaluate what they did in production.

Cheers,
Mike

My 2008 Coupe has a lot of water that stays in the actual door when I wash the car. I can hear the water swirling around inside the door when I open/close the door. However, the water collects only when I wash the car on my driveway (steep incline), and it comes out as soon as the car is on a level surface. I'm assuming my drain holes towards the back of the door are blocked, or they just aren't in that location.

I'm sorry about the completely off-topic post, that had no value to this thread :(

I'll be more specific, It's a red, 2004 convertible.

Is it possible that the mirrors are a source for a leak?

I didn't look, but it did appear that there is a drain hole where the water was streaming out. I didn't notice anything on the passenger side, maybe the drain hole is blocked, I'll take a look.

There was just a lot more water than I would expect from a 2004 car.

Can you see any gap between the glass and the watershield?

Verify that the edge of the door glass is engaging into the weatherstrip.

If not , follow the manufacturers directions for adjustment.

Flip the car over when you wash it next time. If the windows drain this time you'll know it was the water and not just the doors.

You beat me too it Dave. I was going to suggest flipping the car upside down too to get rid of the excess water.

Reminds me of that commercial.......When the COP pulls the guy over and he rolls down the window and the COP says, "Have you been drinking?" :rolaugh:
